Aquafeed Extrusion: Floating, Sinking and Micro-Pellet Feed

How extrusion parameters control floating, sinking and micro-pellet aquafeed — expansion, density, water stability, drying capacity and vacuum coating.

Extrusion is a process control problem, not a machine purchase. The same extruder can make floating tilapia feed, sinking marine feed or shrimp micro-pellets — but only with the right upstream grinding, formulation, and downstream drying and coating.

This guide sets out what to specify for each product type, and how to verify it before the plant is bought.

Floating feed: expansion under control

Floating feed depends on high, uniform expansion: sufficient gelatinisable starch, controlled moisture and steam in the preconditioner, adequate specific mechanical energy, and die and cutter settings that hold the cell structure as the pellet leaves the die.

Uniformity matters more than peak expansion. A batch where a fraction sinks is judged by the farmer on that fraction.

Sinking marine feed: density with limited expansion

Sinking feed needs controlled density, restrained expansion and often high oil inclusion applied after drying. Preconditioning time, screw configuration and die open area are the main levers.

Sinking speed should be specified as a range and tested on your formula, because ingredient density and fat level both shift it.

Shrimp micro-pellets: the hardest specification

Shrimp micro-pellets combine small diameter, fine grinding, binder strategy and gentle downstream handling. The pellet must remain intact in water for hours while the animal feeds slowly.

Fines control is critical: every transfer point, elevator and screen after forming is an opportunity to break product that met specification at the die.

Water stability: agree the test before you buy

Water stability is the acceptance criterion that decides whether an aquafeed plant was a good purchase. It must be validated with an agreed protocol — immersion time, water temperature, agitation, dry matter loss method — at the target pellet size, on the buyer's own formula.

Write the protocol into the RFQ and the performance guarantee. A guarantee referring only to 'good water stability' is unenforceable.

Drying is the real capacity limit

Dryer capacity, not extruder capacity, usually determines plant throughput. Size the dryer against the hardest product — smallest diameter, highest moisture, tightest final moisture tolerance — and check the effect of ambient humidity in your location.

Under-drying causes mould risk and weight-based losses; over-drying wastes fuel and damages pellet quality. Moisture control instrumentation pays back quickly.

Vacuum coating and post-processing

High-energy salmonid and marine feeds need vacuum coating to bring oil into the pellet structure instead of leaving it on the surface. This protects heat-sensitive vitamins and enzymes added after the thermal stages.

Plan for oil handling, temperature control and cleaning between recipes, particularly where medicated or species-specific additives are used.
