What this tool can and can't do
Shrimp Feed Calculator: Cycle Tonnage, FCR and Cost per Kg Harvested is a planning tool for budget-stage and RFQ-stage decisions. It gives defensible numbers to compare suppliers against — it is not an engineering, veterinary or financing approval.
What it can do
- Convert animal numbers, cycle length and intake curves into monthly and annual compound feed tonnage.
- Add a waste and shrinkage allowance so contracted volume matches real consumption.
- Split the total into stage-level volumes (starter, grower, finisher) for tender lots.
- Give an indicative annual feed spend at the price you enter.
What it can't do
- Predict mortality, disease events or intake depression caused by heat stress or water quality.
- Replace weighbridge or silo data once the operation is running — it is a planning model, not a reconciliation tool.
- Include freight, duties, demurrage or financing cost unless you add them to the price input.
- Guarantee supplier availability at the volume or price you plan against.

Shrimp feed required = harvested biomass × FCR. A 1-hectare vannamei pond stocked at 80 PL/m² with 75% survival to 20 g produces about 12 tonnes of shrimp; at an FCR of 1.5 the cycle needs roughly 18 tonnes of feed, and at 1,250 per tonne that is close to 1.88 per kilogram harvested.
The formula

- Biomass harvested = stocked × survival % × harvest weight
- Feed required = biomass harvested × FCR
- Feed cost per kg harvested = (feed tonnes × price per tonne) ÷ biomass in kg
