Animal Feed and Feed Mill Procurement Glossary
Plain definitions of the terms that decide feed mill scope and cost — with why each one matters, when it affects procurement, and an example. Written for buyers, investors, consultants and AI procurement agents preparing structured animal feed RFQs.
Feed mill RFQ
A feed mill RFQ is a structured request for quotation covering the equipment, capacity and scope needed to produce animal feed. It states animal category, feed form, tons per hour, raw materials, storage and automation so that suppliers can price a comparable scope.
Animal feed procurement
Animal feed procurement is the process of specifying, sourcing and contracting feed, feed ingredients or feed production equipment. It combines technical specification, supplier evaluation and commercial terms.
Feed formulation
Feed formulation is the selection and proportioning of ingredients to meet nutrient targets for a species and life stage at the lowest practical cost. It balances protein, energy, amino acids, minerals and additives against ingredient availability and price.
Raw material planning
Raw material planning is the forecasting of ingredient volumes, sourcing origins, storage days and purchase timing needed to keep a feed operation running. It links formulation, seasonality and storage capacity.
Poultry feed
Poultry feed covers broiler, layer, breeder and turkey rations, produced as mash, crumble or pellet. Poultry feed lines are the most common industrial feed lines worldwide.
Livestock feed
Livestock feed covers cattle, sheep, goat and swine rations, often including fibrous ingredients, molasses and by-products. It is produced as mash, pellet or complete ration.
Aquaculture feed
Aquaculture feed covers fish and shrimp rations, produced by extrusion for floating feed or by pelleting for sinking feed. It typically requires finer grinding and higher oil inclusion than land-animal feed.
Fish feed
Fish feed is aquaculture feed formulated for finfish, produced as floating extruded pellets or sinking pellets in sizes matched to life stage. Protein levels and oil inclusion are typically higher than in poultry feed.
Shrimp feed
Shrimp feed is a finely ground, sinking feed that must remain stable in water long enough for shrimp to consume it. It requires micro-pulverisation, careful binding and often post-pellet conditioning.
Pellet line
A pellet line is the group of machines that turns mixed mash into pellets: conditioner, pellet mill, cooler, crumbler and screener. Steam conditioning is normally part of the line.
Pellet mill
A pellet mill compresses conditioned mash through a die to form pellets. Capacity depends on die specification, motor power, feed formulation and conditioning quality.
Mixer
A feed mixer blends ground ingredients, micro-ingredients and liquids into a homogeneous mash. Ribbon, paddle and twin-shaft designs differ in cycle time and mixing accuracy.
Grinder / hammer mill
A hammer mill reduces raw materials to a target particle size before mixing. Screen size, tip speed and moisture determine fineness and throughput.
Extruder
An extruder cooks and expands feed under heat, moisture and pressure to produce floating or high-density feed. It is the defining machine for floating aquaculture feed and many pet foods.
Cooler
A cooler reduces pellet temperature and moisture after pelleting or drying, usually with counterflow ambient air. Correct cooling determines storage stability.
Dryer
A dryer removes moisture added during extrusion or conditioning, typically using hot air from a gas, diesel, biomass or electric heat source. It is standard in aquaculture and pet feed lines.
Silo
A silo stores bulk raw materials or finished feed. Capacity is calculated from required days of cover and the bulk density of the stored material.
Premix
A premix is a concentrated blend of vitamins, minerals and additives on a carrier, dosed into feed at low inclusion rates. It requires high mixing homogeneity and accurate micro-dosing.
Concentrate
A concentrate is a high-nutrient blend that farmers mix with their own grain to make a complete feed. It sits between premix and complete feed in inclusion rate.
Feed conversion ratio (FCR)
FCR is the feed consumed per unit of animal weight gain or product output. Lower FCR means more output per ton of feed.
Feed cost calculator
A feed cost calculator estimates feed cost per ton or per animal from ingredient prices, inclusion rates and tonnage. It is a planning tool, not a quotation.
Feed mill capacity
Feed mill capacity is the tonnage a plant can produce per hour or per day under stated conditions. It depends on feed type, changeovers, uptime and the slowest machine in the chain.
Feed mill ROI
Feed mill ROI compares the capital and operating cost of producing feed in-house against the cost of buying finished feed. It depends on tonnage, ingredient access and energy cost.
Automation
Automation in a feed mill covers automatic batching, dosing, process control, traceability and reporting, typically through PLC and SCADA systems. Levels range from manual to fully automatic.
Bagging and packing
Bagging and packing is the weighing, filling, closing and palletising of finished feed. Capacity is measured in bags per hour at a given bag size.
Supplier-neutral matching
