Poultry Feed Mill vs Aquafeed Mill: Key Differences
Why poultry and aquafeed mills are different plants: grinding, conditioning, forming, drying, coating, water stability and quality control.
A poultry mill and an aquafeed mill share intake, storage and batching — and diverge almost everywhere else.
Understanding the divergence early prevents the most costly mistake in feed projects: buying one plant and expecting it to serve both markets.
Grinding: distribution versus fineness
Poultry feed benefits from a controlled particle size distribution that retains a coarse fraction for gizzard development and gut health. A hammer mill with an appropriate screen usually delivers it.
Aquafeed needs fine, uniform grinding well below pellet diameter, and shrimp feed finer still — frequently requiring a pulveriser or fine grinding circuit with classification. This is an upstream capital and energy decision, not a downstream adjustment.
Forming: pelleting versus extrusion
Poultry feed is steam-conditioned and pelleted, then crumbled for starter phases. The process is comparatively short, energy-lean and forgiving.
Aquafeed is extruded: high shear and temperature gelatinise starch, which controls density, expansion, floatability and durability in water. Extrusion buys product properties that pelleting physically cannot deliver.
Cooling versus drying
Pelleted poultry feed is cooled, removing heat and a little moisture. Extruded feed leaves the die wet and must be dried in a controlled profile, then cooled.
The dryer usually sets the real capacity of an aquafeed plant, which is why aquafeed throughput must be verified against the hardest product in the range rather than the easiest.
Coating and oil inclusion
High-energy aquafeed requires vacuum coating to infuse oil after drying, protecting heat-sensitive additives and reaching inclusion levels a pellet cannot carry.
Poultry feed usually applies limited post-pelleting fat with simpler spraying equipment.
Different quality metrics entirely
Poultry mills measure pellet durability index, hardness and fines at discharge and after transport. Aquafeed mills measure water stability over hours, sinking speed or floatability, expansion, oil retention and dust.
Because the acceptance tests differ, the guarantee wording in the purchase contract differs too. Specify the test method, sample point and formula used for acceptance.
