What is farm feeding infrastructure?
The chain that moves feed from the delivery truck to the animal: bulk receiving and unloading, storage with enough tonnage and enough separate compartments, conveying, distribution to each production unit, local or day storage, feeders and dosing, and the control layer that schedules feeding, records consumption per unit and raises alarms. On a growing farm the shared elements — receiving, storage and the main distribution route — usually constrain expansion before the feeders do.
How much feed storage does a large commercial farm need?
Multiply peak daily feed consumption by the cover days you want between deliveries, add safety stock for a late truck, then convert tonnage to volume using the bulk density of your feed. A farm consuming 50 tonnes a day that wants seven days of cover needs roughly 350 tonnes before safety stock. Total tonnage is only half the answer — the number of separate compartments for the feed types in simultaneous use matters just as much.
When should a farm automate feeding?
When the daily feeding workload no longer fits reliably into available labour hours at the required accuracy: feeding times drift, quantities become approximate between units, consumption is reconstructed rather than recorded, and the routine depends on a few experienced staff. The trigger is consistency and data quality at scale rather than animal numbers on their own.
