Cómo definir los requisitos
- Decide who owns the formulation. An open, buyer-owned formula is quotable by several suppliers; a proprietary premix is not comparable on price.
- Specify the inclusion rate (typically 0.25–5 kg/t) — it dictates carrier volume and dosing accuracy.
- Declare the vitamin sources and forms you accept (e.g. coated vitamin A, 25-OH-D3) and any overage policy.
- State the trace mineral form: sulphate, oxide, or organic/chelated, with the required bioavailability rationale.
- Define the carrier, anti-caking agent and whether medicated or non-medicated production lines are required.
Especificaciones que importan
| Parámetro | Requisito típico | Por qué le importa al comprador |
|---|---|---|
| Vitamin declarations | IU or mg per kg of premix | The purchased value; must be traceable to the finished feed target. |
| Overage | Supplier-stated % by vitamin | Covers processing and storage losses; hidden overage differences make offers non-comparable. |
| Trace mineral form and level | Sulphate / oxide / chelated | Bioavailability and the pro-oxidant load on vitamins differ substantially. |
| Carrier | Limestone, wheat middlings, silicates | Affects density, flow, segregation and vitamin stability. |
| Particle size and density | Matched to your mixer | Segregation in transport and storage destroys homogeneity. |
| Homogeneity (CV) | ≤ 5–10% on a marker | Direct proof of manufacturing control. |
| Moisture and caking | Low, free flowing | Moisture accelerates vitamin loss and blocks dosing equipment. |
| Cross-contamination control | Documented flushing/sequencing | Critical where medicated products share the line. |
- — FAMI-QS or GMP+ certification for the premix plant, with the scope covering your product type
- — ISO 22000 / HACCP with documented allergen and medication carry-over control
- — Local manufacturing licence and, where relevant, veterinary medicinal product authorisation
- — ISO 17025 accredited laboratory for verification analyses
- — Halal / Kosher / non-GM statements where the market demands them
- — Certificate of Analysis per batch with vitamin assays and mineral levels
- — Homogeneity report using a defined marker at your inclusion rate
- — Stability data over the stated shelf life at realistic storage temperature and humidity
- — Cross-contamination / carry-over validation from the production line
- — Independent verification of two or three key vitamins on the first batches
- — 25 kg multi-wall bags with a moisture barrier — the default for most premixes
- — Pre-weighed batch bags matched to one mixer load to eliminate weighing error
- — Big bags only where dosing equipment and turnover justify them
- — Labels must state batch, production date, expiry, storage conditions and full declaration
- — Protect from heat and humidity; vitamin loss during a hot sea leg is real and unrecoverable
- — Avoid stowage next to acids, salts and strongly hygroscopic cargo
- — For long routes consider split shipments to reduce shelf-life exposure
- — Specify pallet, wrapping and container-liner requirements in the purchase order
- — Cool, dry, dark storage with humidity control where possible
- — Maximum practical storage of about 3 months from production in hot climates
- — Strict FIFO with expiry-based picking and monthly stock reconciliation
- — Do not decant into open bins; use sealed original packaging until dosing
Riesgos de compra
Control: Independent assay of two or three marker vitamins per quarter with a contractual tolerance and remedy.
Control: Require every bidder to quote the same declared levels and disclose overage separately.
Control: Own your formulation, or contract the right to a full declaration on exit.
Control: Line-sequencing and flushing validation, plus residue testing on the first non-medicated batch.
Control: Shorter order cycles and warehouse temperature logging rather than large discounted orders.
- — Tendering a proprietary premix against an open formula and treating the prices as comparable
- — Ignoring overage differences and then blaming performance variation on the farm
- — Choosing a carrier that segregates in transport and destroys mixing homogeneity
- — Buying six months of premix to capture a discount in a 35 °C warehouse
- — Never running an independent vitamin assay because the certificate of analysis always passes
