Swine Feed Calculator: Phase Tonnage, Cost per Pig and Annual Procurement is a planning tool for budget-stage and RFQ-stage decisions. It gives defensible numbers to compare suppliers against — it is not an engineering, veterinary or financing approval.
What it can do
- Convert animal numbers, cycle length and intake curves into monthly and annual compound feed tonnage.
- Add a waste and shrinkage allowance so contracted volume matches real consumption.
- Split the total into stage-level volumes (starter, grower, finisher) for tender lots.

What it can't do
- Predict mortality, disease events or intake depression caused by heat stress or water quality.
- Replace weighbridge or silo data once the operation is running — it is a planning model, not a reconciliation tool.
- Include freight, duties, demurrage or financing cost unless you add them to the price input.
- Guarantee supplier availability at the volume or price you plan against.

Pig feed per phase = pigs in the phase × weight gained in that phase × the phase FCR. A pig taken from 7 kg to 115 kg typically eats about 250 kg of feed across creep, nursery, grower and finisher, and on a 20,000-pig-a-year unit that is roughly 5,000 tonnes to contract.
The formula
- Phase feed = pigs in phase × weight gained in the phase × phase FCR
- Total feed per year = nursery + grower + finisher tonnes
- Feed cost per pig = total phase spend ÷ pigs marketed
- Feed cost per kg of gain = total spend ÷ (pigs × (market weight − weaning weight))
