Dosing accuracy is a system property, not a scale rating
Accuracy is set by scale resolution, feeder design, batch size and control strategy together. A dosing point accurate at a two-tonne batch may be unusable at 500 kilograms, because the required addition falls below a reliable fraction of the scale range.
Specify the smallest addition you will make, at the smallest batch size you will run, and require the supplier to state the expected tolerance for that case.
Carry-over and cross-contamination control
Carry-over matters whenever recipes differ in medication, species or additive profile — and it is a design decision, not only a procedure. Sequencing rules, flushing batches, dedicated lines, self-cleaning mixers and conveyor design all contribute.
Where medicated feed is produced, agree the carry-over limit and the validation method in advance; many audit schemes and national regulations define both.
Hand-add stations and operator control
Most mills retain hand-add for the smallest or most sensitive additions. Hand-add is where traceability usually breaks, so specify barcode or RFID confirmation, weighing terminals linked to the batch record and enforced sequencing.
Liquid addition: fats, enzymes, acids
Liquid systems need temperature control, accurate flow or weight measurement, dedicated lines for incompatible products and cleaning between recipes. Post-pelleting application of heat-sensitive liquids requires its own accuracy verification.
Traceability and batch genealogy
Customer and audit requirements usually drive the automation scope more than production does: lot-level genealogy from raw material intake to dispatched batch, deviation logging, retention samples and rapid recall reporting.
Decide early whether you need to reconstruct any delivered batch back to supplier lots within a defined time — that single requirement changes the specification of the control system.

Verification after commissioning
Verification is how you know the system delivers what was sold: mixer coefficient of variation testing with a suitable tracer, dosing calibration checks across the working range, and a documented recalibration interval.
Include the verification tests and their acceptance thresholds in the purchase contract, along with responsibility for repeat testing if the first run fails.
