How Feed Quality Affects FCR and Farm Profitability
The link between feed processing quality and feed conversion: particle size, pellet durability, fines, water stability and the economics of a small FCR change.
Feed conversion is where mill decisions convert into farm profit. A plant that produces cheap feed with poor physical quality transfers cost straight to the farm.
This guide quantifies the link, so buyers can compare feed on delivered cost of gain rather than on price per tonne.
Particle size and digestibility
Particle size affects surface area for digestion and, in poultry, gizzard development and gut health. Too fine can impair gut function and increase dustiness; too coarse reduces nutrient availability and pellet quality.
Uniformity is as important as the mean. A wide distribution means some of the ration is over-processed and some is under-processed in every mouthful.
Conditioning, durability and fines
Conditioning time and temperature drive starch gelatinisation, hygiene and pellet durability. Durable pellets survive transport, bins and feeding systems.
Fines are pure loss. Feed that arrives broken is eaten selectively or wasted, and the effect compounds over a full grow-out cycle — a durability problem discovered at the farm is usually a conditioning or die specification problem at the mill.
Water stability in aquaculture
In aquaculture the physical quality question is decisive: feed that disintegrates before consumption inflates FCR, wastes ingredients and degrades water quality, which then costs again in growth and health.
Measure both stability and feeding behaviour. A specification that only tests in still water may not reflect a raceway or a stocked pond.
The economics of a small FCR change
Feed is typically 60–75 percent of the cost of production in intensive livestock and aquaculture. At those shares, a small improvement in feed conversion usually outweighs a modest difference in price per tonne.
Run the comparison numerically: cost per tonne divided by the FCR each feed actually delivers gives cost of feed per kilogram of gain, which is the number that belongs in a purchase decision.

Measuring on-farm performance credibly
Comparisons only hold if the rest of the system is held constant: genetics, stocking density, water or house conditions, health programme and weighing method.
Record feed delivered rather than feed ordered, and account for waste at the feeder — otherwise the FCR you calculate is the mill's number, not the farm's.
What to put in the specification
Write the physical quality criteria into the purchase specification: particle size range, pellet diameter and length, durability index, maximum fines at delivery, moisture and, for aquafeed, water stability at a defined test.
Then require the same criteria to be reported per delivery. Physical quality that is never measured is never maintained.
