Can your utilities support a feed mill expansion?
Expanding from 10 to 20 tonnes per hour is rarely just a machinery project. Connected electrical load, transformer capacity, incoming supply, backup generation, boiler output and steam quality, compressed air, water, dust extraction and ventilation all scale with production, and any one of them can make an otherwise sound expansion unbuildable or unreliable. Utilities should be qualified before equipment is scoped, because a supply upgrade often has a longer lead time and a different approval path than the process line itself.
Utility headroom is the fastest way to sort a shortlist of expansion options into feasible and infeasible. It belongs at the start of the project, not in commissioning.

- Incoming supply capacity and the utility's ability to increase it, with lead time
- Transformer rating against measured peak demand, not nameplate sum
- Motor control centre space, cable routes and switchgear capacity
- Power factor, harmonics and the effect of large drives
- Backup generation strategy: full plant, critical loads only, or none
- Tariff structure and whether peak demand charges change the operating plan
Steam and thermal
- Boiler output against conditioning demand at the target rate
- Steam quality, dryness and pressure stability at the conditioner
- Distribution pipework sizing, insulation and condensate return
- Fuel supply, storage and emissions compliance for any boiler upgrade
- Dryer heat demand where extrusion or aqua feed is added
Air, water and environment
- Compressed air volume and quality for pneumatic valves, slide gates and packing
- Water supply for conditioning, liquid addition and cleaning
- Dust extraction and filtration capacity at higher material flow
- Ventilation and heat rejection in the process building
- Noise limits at the site boundary after new equipment is installed
- Fire and explosion protection review triggered by new dust-handling capacity
How to qualify utilities before scoping equipment
- Measure actual peak electrical demand over a representative period, not the sum of motor ratings
- Log steam pressure at the conditioner during the hardest recipe at full rate
- Establish the utility upgrade lead time and permitting path in your country
- Decide the backup power philosophy before layout, because it changes the electrical room
- Include utility scope explicitly in every supplier quotation as included or excluded
