What are the stages of an industrial feed production line?

An industrial feed production line runs raw material intake and cleaning, storage in silos and bins, dosing and batching by weight, grinding to a target particle size, mixing with liquids and micro-ingredients, conditioning with steam, pelletizing or extrusion, cooling and crumbling, screening, optional post-process coating, and finally bagging or bulk load-out. Capacity is set by the slowest stage, so the whole line must be sized around the product range before any equipment is quoted.

Raw material intake and storage

Intake capacity has to match the delivery pattern, not the production rate. A mill fed by trucks in a short daily window needs faster intake and more buffer than one on continuous rail or barge supply.

Storage days of cover is a commercial decision before it is an engineering one: it reflects harvest seasonality, import lead time, working capital and contamination risk, not just silo price.

Dosing and batching

Dosing accuracy determines whether the recipe leaving the mixer is the recipe a nutritionist specified. Major, minor and micro ingredients normally need different scales and tolerances, and micro-ingredients often need a separate dosing station or a pre-weighed premix.

Ask for the stated weighing tolerance per scale range, the calibration procedure and how the batch record is stored — traceability disputes are almost always resolved from batching records.

Grinding

Particle size targets differ sharply by species and by process: poultry and swine pelleted feed, shrimp micro-pellets and extruded aquafeed sit at very different finenesses, and finer grinding costs energy and capacity.

Grinding is frequently the throughput bottleneck when a mill later adds aquafeed to a poultry line. Specify the finest product the line must make, not the average one.

Mixing

Mixing performance is measured by coefficient of variation on a tracer test at the contract batch size, with the mixing time and liquid addition declared. A mixer accepted without a CV test has no verified performance at all.

Conditioning, pelletizing and extrusion

Conditioning sets pellet quality before the die does. Steam quality, retention time and temperature control are as important as pellet mill motor power.

Whether the line pelletizes or extrudes is decided by the product specification — floating feed, high fat inclusion, water stability and micro-pellets push a project toward extrusion, with a dryer that usually becomes the largest thermal consumer. Cooling, screening and coating

Cooling returns the product to close to ambient temperature and to a safe storage moisture. Under-sized cooling shows up later as mould complaints and rejected batches, not as a visible production fault.

Post-process coating is required whenever fat inclusion is above what the forming step tolerates, or when a heat-sensitive additive must be applied after the thermal stages.

Capacity, utilities and automation

Line capacity equals the slowest stage under the worst recipe, at realistic operating hours. Quotations that state a single tonnes-per-hour figure without naming the recipe and the operating hours cannot be compared.

Connected electrical load, steam capacity, water and compressed air frequently constrain a project after equipment selection. Establish them with the site before the RFQ, not after the first quotation.

Quality control across the line

Each stage has its own control point: moisture and contaminants at intake, particle size after grinding, CV after mixing, temperature and retention in conditioning, durability or water stability after forming, and moisture and temperature after cooling.

Formulation and nutritional decisions are not part of the equipment scope. Any recipe, inclusion rate or nutrient target is a planning aid and must be verified by a qualified animal nutritionist before production.

FAQ

What is the difference between pelleting and extrusion?
Pelleting conditions and compresses mash through a die at moderate temperature and is standard for poultry, swine and ruminant feed. Extrusion cooks the mash under higher temperature, moisture and shear, expands it and allows floating feed, high fat inclusion, micro-pellets and improved water stability — at higher CAPEX, higher energy use and a drying step.
What affects feed mill CAPEX?
Feed mill CAPEX depends on feed type, target capacity, raw material handling, grinding, batching, mixing, pelleting or extrusion, drying, cooling, coating, packaging, automation, additive dosing, storage, laboratory needs, utilities, civil works and local regulatory requirements.
What affects feed mill OPEX?
Raw material cost dominates, typically followed by energy, labour, maintenance and spare parts, additives and premix, packaging and logistics, quality control, formula changes and — critically — actual production utilisation against installed capacity.
