What does aquafeed extrusion do and what equipment does it need?
Aquafeed extrusion cooks a finely ground mash under heat, moisture and shear, then forms and expands it so the pellet can be made floating, slow-sinking or micro-sized, hold high oil inclusion and remain stable in water. A typical line has fine grinding, batching and mixing, a preconditioner, extruder, dryer, coater, cooler, sizing and packing.
What aquafeed extrusion does
Extrusion gelatinises starch, sterilises the mash, and lets the process engineer control density and durability. That control is what makes floating feed, micro-pellets and high-fat diets possible — none of which a conventional pellet mill produces reliably.
Floating feed vs sinking feed
- Floating: higher expansion, lower density, visible feeding response
- Slow-sinking: controlled expansion for species feeding in the water column
- Sinking: minimal expansion, dense pellet, used for shrimp and bottom feeders
- Density is controlled through moisture, temperature, screw configuration and die design
Shrimp feed and micro-pellets
Shrimp are slow, discontinuous feeders, so the pellet must survive in water long enough to be consumed. Small diameters, fine grinding and tight forming control are mandatory, and fines directly become uneaten cost and water-quality load.

- Must be tied to a named test method and immersion time in any supplier guarantee
- Directly affects feed conversion and pond water quality
Protein and fat formulation
High protein and high fat diets change processing behaviour: fat added before the extruder limits expansion, which is why substantial oil inclusion is applied after drying via coating. Inclusion levels themselves are nutrition decisions for a qualified nutritionist.
Grinding and particle size
Aquafeed grinding is far finer than poultry feed grinding, and shrimp feed finer again. Grinding capacity drops sharply as fineness increases, which is a common cause of an aquafeed line failing to reach nameplate output.
Drying and coating
The dryer usually sets the real capacity of an aquafeed line and must be sized on moisture removal per hour, not on a tonnage label. Uneven drying produces mould risk in some bags and over-dried, brittle pellets in others.
Oil coating
Vacuum coating pulls oil and heat-sensitive additives into the pellet structure rather than leaving them on the surface, improving retention and reducing leaching. Atmospheric coating is cheaper and adequate at lower inclusion levels.
Feed conversion and water quality
In aquaculture, feed that disintegrates is both a cost and a water-quality problem. Physical quality therefore affects FCR, oxygen demand and disease pressure simultaneously.
