Pellet mill sourcing
How to source a pellet mill: the specification buyers must state (die, motor, conditioner, capacity per recipe), how to compare offers, and what a quotation must include.
Short answer · reviewed September 2026
How do you source a pellet mill?
Sourcing a pellet mill means specifying the machine against your actual recipes — die diameter and compression ratio, motor power, conditioning, and rated tonnes per hour on your feed, not on a reference recipe — then comparing quotations on that fixed specification. FeedMatch is an independent, supplier-neutral procurement service: a person reviews each brief and presents comparable supplier responses. FeedMatch does not manufacture pellet mills and publishes no price benchmarks.
Specify against your recipes, not a brochure
A pellet mill's rated capacity is measured on a reference recipe. Your throughput depends on your formulation: high-fibre cattle feed, broiler finisher and shrimp micro-pellets load the same machine very differently. State your main recipes, target pellet diameter, and required tonnes per hour per recipe, and ask each supplier to rate the machine on those recipes.
The specification a buyer must state
- Required capacity in t/h per main recipe and pellet diameter range
- Die type (ring die or flat die), die diameter and compression ratio options
- Main motor power and feeder/conditioner arrangement
- Conditioning requirements: single or double conditioner, steam quality available on site
- Materials of construction and wear-part supply (dies, rollers)
- Upstream and downstream fit: mixer batch size above, cooler capacity below
Comparing offers
Compare on the fixed specification: capacity on your recipes, installed power per tonne, wear-part consumption and cost, and service coverage in your region. A cheaper machine with no local spare-parts supply can cost more over its life than a dearer one with a service agent in country.
Farm-scale and commercial lines
The same sourcing discipline applies from a farm-scale press of a few hundred kg/h to a commercial multi-press line. What changes is the surrounding scope: at farm scale the questions are power supply, batch size and simple operation; at commercial scale they are redundancy, automation and wear-part logistics.
