How does feed quality affect FCR and farm profitability?

Feed conversion ratio is feed consumed divided by output produced. Nutrient consistency, pellet durability, water stability, particle size and storage handling determine how much purchased feed is actually eaten and converted, so physical feed quality moves FCR — and therefore feed cost per kg of output — before any formulation change does.

What FCR means

FCR is the mass of feed consumed divided by the mass of live weight, eggs or biomass produced over a defined period. It only means something when the period, mortality treatment and weighing basis are stated the same way each time.

Why feed quality affects farm economics

Feed is usually the largest single cost on a commercial livestock or aquaculture operation. A small FCR movement therefore changes cost per kg of output more than most other operational levers available to the farm.

Poultry FCR

Driven by genetics, health, environment and feed. On the feed side, pellet quality and fines at the feeder, particle size consistency and nutrient uniformity are the practical levers a mill controls.

Fish FCR

Depends heavily on feeding management, water temperature and pellet behaviour in water. Feed that sinks past a surface-feeding species is simply lost, whatever its nutrient profile.

Shrimp FCR

Highly sensitive to water stability and fines, because shrimp feed slowly and disintegrating pellets both fail to feed the animal and degrade water quality.

Pellet durability

Durability determines how much pellet survives transport, silo filling and the feeding system. Fines are paid for as feed and often consumed as waste.

Water stability

For aquaculture, stability over the actual feeding window is the operative measure — not stability at an arbitrary short immersion time used in marketing.

Nutrient consistency

Batch-to-batch variation forces safety margins into formulation. Better mixing homogeneity and dosing accuracy allow those margins to be reduced, which is a direct cost saving over a year.

Digestibility

Processing conditions affect starch gelatinisation and nutrient availability. Over-processing wastes energy; under-processing wastes nutrients. Both show up in FCR, not in the invoice.

Storage and handling

Moisture pickup, mould, insect damage and mechanical breakage between mill and feeder are real losses that rarely appear in any cost model. They should be measured on farm.
