What this tool can and can't do

Feed Mill CAPEX Estimator is a planning tool for budget-stage and RFQ-stage decisions. It gives defensible numbers to compare suppliers against — it is not an engineering, veterinary or financing approval.

What it can do

  • Size the required line capacity in tonnes per hour from annual tonnage, shifts and realistic uptime.
  • Estimate connected load and specific energy consumption (kWh per tonne) by process stage.
  • Show the effect of automation level, process type (pelleting versus extrusion) and utilisation on cost per tonne.
  • Give an indicative CAPEX band and payback range for budgeting.

What it can't do

  • Substitute for a vendor's guaranteed capacity or energy figures — those come with the equipment contract.
  • Include site-specific electrical infrastructure, transformer upgrades, grid tariffs or generator backup unless you add them.
  • Model your actual formula's grinding and conditioning behaviour, which changes energy per tonne materially.
  • Serve as a bankable feasibility study or a financing document.

It estimates the throughput a feed mill or production line can hold over a working period, from batch, process and operating-hour assumptions. It suits mill owners and investors comparing scenarios. Two mills with the same nominal capacity can need different equipment, so treat this as a preliminary planning figure.

What does feed mill CAPEX actually include?
Installed feed mill CAPEX covers the process line (intake, grinding, dosing, mixing, pelleting or extrusion, cooling, screening, bagging or bulk loadout), intake and finished-feed storage, land and civil works including the tower, utilities such as transformer, boiler, generator and compressed air, freight, insurance and duties, erection and commissioning, engineering and permits, commissioning spares, and contingency. Equipment alone is typically only 45–60% of the installed cost, which is why comparing bare machine prices between suppliers is misleading.
Does FeedMatch publish feed mill equipment prices?
No. FeedMatch is an independent, supplier-neutral, human-led sourcing and RFQ platform — not a manufacturer, EPC contractor, broker-dealer or marketplace — and publishes no equipment or feed prices. This estimator computes only with the rates you enter. Current, comparable prices come from a managed RFQ against a defined technical specification.
How accurate is a CAPEX estimate at this stage?
A screening-stage estimate built from your own rates is normally accurate to roughly -15% to +25% before a technical specification exists. That band is shown alongside the total. Once scope, capacity, process route, storage volume and automation depth are fixed, supplier quotations narrow it considerably.
What contingency should a feed mill project carry?
10–15% contingency is standard for a defined scope at screening stage. Projects with unresolved civil works, imported equipment exposed to freight and duty volatility, or donor and government tender rules often carry 15–20%.
Why does automation depth change the CAPEX so much?
Automation is not only the control panel. Full plant automation adds weighing accuracy, batch traceability, recipe management, MES integration and additional instrumentation across the line, which typically adds a meaningful percentage to the process-equipment value while reducing labour and giveaway in OPEX. The estimator applies that uplift to the process line only and lets you test both cases.
