Should the project use a pellet mill or an extrusion line?
Use pelleting when the product range is mash, pellets and crumbles for poultry, swine or ruminants. Use extrusion when the product must float, carry high fat inclusion, hold water stability or be produced as micro-pellets — typically fish and shrimp feed. Extrusion costs substantially more in CAPEX and drying energy, so the product specification, not the equipment preference, should decide.
When pelleting makes sense
- Poultry, swine and ruminant feed in mash, pellet and crumble form
- Sinking products where water stability is not a requirement
- Lower capital budget and simpler thermal infrastructure
- High tonnage of a limited number of recipes
When extrusion makes sense
- Floating or slow-sinking aquafeed
- High fat inclusion beyond what pelleting tolerates
- Micro-pellets for shrimp and fish fry
- Higher starch gelatinisation and digestibility requirements
Poultry feed requirements
Pelleting with crumbling for starter phases is standard. The commercial priorities are pellet durability at the feeder, throughput per recipe and consistent particle size after grinding.
Fish feed requirements
Extrusion with drying and coating, across several pellet diameters as fish grow. Buoyancy control and oil absorption capacity are the defining process requirements.
Shrimp feed requirements
Ultra-fine grinding, micro-pellet forming and water stability over extended immersion. Shrimp feed is the most demanding common product on both grinding and dosing accuracy.

Micro-pellets
Micro-pellets require fine grinding, precise forming and gentle handling to limit fines. Both extrusion and specialised pelleting routes exist; the choice depends on target diameter, water stability and volume.
Energy use
Pelleting consumes steam for conditioning and electrical energy at the pellet mill. Extrusion adds preconditioning steam, extruder motor load and a dryer that is usually the largest thermal consumer in the plant.

Product quality comparison
Pelleting is judged on durability and fines; extrusion is judged on buoyancy control, water stability, oil retention and uniform moisture after drying. Each requires a different quality control setup.
