What determines feed mill CAPEX?
Feed mill CAPEX depends on feed type, target capacity, raw material handling, grinding, batching, mixing, pelleting or extrusion, drying, cooling, coating, packaging, automation, additive dosing, storage, laboratory needs, utilities, civil works and local regulatory requirements.
What CAPEX means in feed production
CAPEX is the one-time capital cost of building or upgrading the plant: equipment, structures, electrical works, installation, commissioning and the associated engineering and logistics.
There is no reliable cost per tonne of capacity. Two mills with the same nameplate throughput can differ by a factor of two once process type, storage, automation and civil scope are included.
CAPEX for poultry feed mills
Pelleting-based plants with crumbling for starter phases. The main capital drivers are intake and cleaning, silo capacity, hammer mill and mixer sizing, conditioner and pellet mill capacity, cooler and crumbler, and finished-feed bins with bulk or bagged load-out.
Recipe count matters: every additional phase and species adds bins, dosing points and changeover time, reducing effective throughput for the same nameplate rating.
CAPEX for aquafeed mills
Extrusion plants add a preconditioner, extruder, dryer, coater and cooler, plus a much larger thermal energy system. In most aquafeed projects the dryer is the single largest capital item and the most common source of capacity shortfall when undersized.
CAPEX for shrimp feed extrusion
Shrimp feed pushes grinding fineness, forming accuracy and drying control well beyond a standard fish feed line. Capital cost rises through ultra-fine grinding, tight micro-dosing, micro-pellet forming and the quality infrastructure needed to prove water stability.
CAPEX for fish feed production
Cost scales with the range of pellet diameters, the oil inclusion target and whether floating, slow-sinking and sinking products are all required. Vacuum coating for high fat inclusion and heat-sensitive additives is a discrete capital decision.
CAPEX for livestock feed mills
Ruminant and swine plants are usually dominated by raw material handling, storage days and mixing capacity rather than by thermal processing. Where mash is acceptable, avoiding a pellet line changes the capital profile substantially.
CAPEX for premix and additive dosing systems
Micro and liquid dosing systems are judged on accuracy class, minimum batch, contamination control and integration with the existing batching controller — not on headline throughput. High-accuracy weighing and dedicated flushing routines carry real capital cost.
CAPEX for feed mill automation and traceability
Ranges from manual batch sheets to full recipe management with batch genealogy, deviation logging and audit-ready records. Retro-fitting later is consistently more expensive than specifying the level upfront.
