Why recipe assumptions matter when comparing feed mills

Short answer

Every capacity figure, energy figure and wear-part estimate in a feed mill proposal rests on an assumed recipe. Change fibre, fat, starch or mineral content and throughput, energy per tonne and die life all move. If each supplier uses its own assumption, the three proposals on your desk are three different experiments and cannot be compared. Fix one design recipe — normally the most demanding product at the smallest pellet diameter — attach it to the RFQ, and require every figure to be stated against it.

Recipe is the hidden variable behind almost every disagreement that surfaces after commissioning.

Conditioning temperature, retention time and steam demand
Die specification, throughput and pellet durability
Die and roll life, and therefore wear-part cost per tonne

Choose the design recipe from your product mix, not from an average
Include the second-most demanding recipe as a check case
State moisture, fat and fibre ranges rather than single values
Require suppliers to declare any deviation from your basis in writing
Carry the same recipe into the performance test clause

What if my recipes are confidential?

Share a representative technical profile — fibre, fat, starch, mineral content, moisture and pellet diameter — rather than the commercial formulation. That is sufficient for process sizing and for a defensible guarantee.

What if my product mix will change after start-up?

State the future envelope in the RFQ so suppliers size for it or price the upgrade path. Discovering the envelope after commissioning is the expensive route.
