Feed mill project definition
Before you request quotes for a commercial feed mill
Define eight things before you contact a single equipment supplier: the products you will make (poultry, livestock, aqua, shrimp, pet food), the feed forms (mash, pellet, crumble, extruded, floating or sinking), the capacity basis (tonnes per hour, operating hours per day, days per year, annual tonnes), the raw materials you will actually run, the process line from intake to bagging, the utilities available on site (electricity, steam, water, compressed air, fuel, backup power), the automation level (dosing, process control, traceability, PLC/SCADA, formulation integration) and the commercial boundary (budget, site, building, installation, commissioning, training, spares, warranty, financing). Suppliers quote against whatever is undefined, which is why undefined projects produce uncomparable proposals.
A feed mill proposal is a description of a plant, not a price. When the brief is loose, every supplier fills the gaps with its own assumptions about recipe, pellet diameter, storage days, civil boundary and automation depth — and the resulting documents cannot be read against one another. The work below takes days, not months, and it is the single highest-return step in a feed-mill project.

Product mix drives process route, wear-part cost and throughput more than any other input.
- Species and stages: broiler, layer, breeder, swine, dairy, beef, tilapia, shrimp, salmonid, pet food where supported
- Share of annual tonnage per product, not just the product list
- Recipe count and how often the mill changes recipe per shift
- Medicated, organic or certified lines requiring flushing or segregation
- Which product defines the design case — usually the most demanding, not the largest volume
2. Feed form
- Mash: lowest CAPEX and energy, no pelleting line
- Pellet: die diameter and length per product, conditioning temperature and retention time
- Crumble: crumbler and screening capacity, fines return
- Extruded: single or twin screw, density target, dryer and cooler duty
- Floating vs sinking aqua feed: density and water-stability requirement stated in writing
3. Capacity
Quote throughput as an operating model, never as a single number.
- Design tonnes per hour and the recipe basis behind it
- Expected tonnes per hour on your own worst-case recipe and pellet diameter
- Operating hours per day and shifts, days per year, planned maintenance windows
- Annual tonnage today and the growth case you want the layout to accept
- Whether expansion reserve (space, structure, power) must be built into the first phase
4. Raw materials
- Grains and their bulk density, moisture and expected variability
- Protein meals, by-products and fibrous ingredients that affect grinding and pelleting
- Oils and liquids: addition point, quantity, heating requirement
- Premixes, micro-ingredients and additive dosing accuracy required
- Intake mode: bulk truck, rail, big bag, small bag — and peak intake rate
5. Process
- Intake, pre-cleaning, magnets and aspiration
- Raw-material storage: silo count and storage days per ingredient group
- Grinding: hammer mill or roller mill, pre- or post-grinding, screen set
- Batching and dosing: weighing accuracy, micro and liquid scales
- Mixing: mixer type, batch size, CV specification, liquid addition capacity
- Conditioning, pelleting or extrusion, drying, cooling, crumbling, sieving, coating
- Finished-product bins, bagging, palletising and bulk loadout
- Dust control, explosion protection and hygiene design level
6. Utilities
- Electricity: available kVA, voltage, frequency, transformer ownership boundary
- Steam: boiler in or out of supplier scope, fuel type, condensate return
- Water: quality, volume, treatment requirement
- Compressed air: capacity, dryer, distribution boundary
- Backup power: generator sizing basis and which loads must survive an outage
7. Automation
- Control philosophy: manual, semi-automatic batching or full recipe management
- PLC and SCADA platform, and who owns the source code and licences
- Traceability: lot tracking from intake to finished bag, and retention period
- Reporting: production, consumption, downtime, energy per tonne
- Integration with formulation, ERP or weighbridge systems, stated as an interface list
8. Commercial boundary
- Budget range and the decision authority behind it
- Site: plot, access, soil data, seismic and wind design, prevailing climate
- Building and civil works: who designs, who builds, who carries interface risk
- Installation, supervision and local labour availability
- Commissioning, performance test conditions and acceptance criteria
- Training days, language and location
- Commissioning spares and first-year wear parts (dies, rolls, screens, hammers)
- Warranty duration and service response expectation
- Whether an independent financing pathway is required for part of the CAPEX
