Is storage limiting your feed mill expansion?
A plant can have enough machine capacity and still be unable to produce more, because material-flow capacity — not process capacity — is the constraint. Raw-material silo volume, the number of separate ingredient bins, premix and micro-ingredient storage, finished-feed silos, warehouse space, truck unloading rate, bulk-loading rate and the delivery schedule all cap sustained output. Raising tonnes per hour increases consumption and dispatch proportionally, so storage and logistics must be reviewed in the same project as the machinery, not after it.
Storage is the most common reason an expansion under-delivers. The line reaches its new rate for a shift, then stops because bins are empty or finished-feed silos are full.

- Raw-material silo capacity in tonnes and in days of cover at the new consumption rate
- Number of separate ingredient bins — total volume can be adequate while bin count is not
- Bagged ingredient and premix storage, including segregation and temperature requirements
- Truck or vessel unloading rate against the number of deliveries the new rate requires
- Weighbridge and intake queueing at peak delivery days
- Supplier lead time and the exposure created if one delivery slips
What to assess on the outbound side
- Finished-feed silo capacity as a production buffer, not just as storage
- Bagged finished-feed warehouse space and palletising throughput
- Bulk-loading rate and the number of loading points
- Dispatch window — how many hours a day trucks can actually be loaded
- Product segregation for medicated feed, species separation or customer-specific batches
- Delivery schedule and whether customers can absorb larger, less frequent loads
How storage caps a line that looks fast enough
Production is only sustainable when inbound replenishment, buffer volume and outbound dispatch all match the new hourly rate. If finished-feed silos hold four hours of production and dispatch runs eight hours a day, a sixteen-hour production plan will not hold regardless of press capacity. Model the material balance across a full week, including the worst delivery day, before sizing equipment.
What to put in the RFQ
- Target tonnes per hour and the resulting daily raw-material consumption
- Required days of cover for bulk raw materials and for finished feed
- Number of separate ingredient bins and micro-ingredient positions
- Intake rate and dispatch rate required at the new production level
- Whether silo civil works, structural steel and conveying are inside or outside supplier scope
- Dust control and explosion-protection requirements for new storage
