How do I automate an existing feed mill?
Start by defining the control philosophy and traceability requirement, then survey the existing electrical installation, scales, dosing hardware and motor control. A retrofit normally combines new weighing and dosing hardware with a new PLC and SCADA layer, executed in a phased cutover so production loss is contained. Scope, staging and cutover plan should all be in the RFQ.
Will automation increase my tons per hour?
Only if batching or weighing cycle time is the limiting stage, or if downtime and rework are consuming hours. Automation more reliably improves consistency, traceability and control than raw throughput. Any capacity claim should be tied to a specific measured constraint.
Should automation be bought from the equipment supplier or separately?
Both routes exist. A single supplier reduces interface risk but can lock you into a proprietary platform; a separate automation contractor can give an open, locally supportable system but adds coordination responsibility. Whichever route you take, fix code and data ownership in the contract.
