What sits inside the additives category

Additives are the low-inclusion, high-value part of a ration: crystalline amino acids, vitamins and vitamin premixes, trace minerals in oxide, sulphate, hydroxy or chelated form, feed enzymes such as phytase, xylanase and protease, organic and inorganic acidifiers, mycotoxin binders, antioxidants, probiotics, prebiotics, phytogenics, pigments, and technological aids such as pellet binders, emulsifiers and anti-caking agents. They rarely exceed 3–5% of tonnage yet routinely account for 15–30% of ration cost, which is why undisciplined additive buying quietly erodes margin faster than any grain purchase.

Step 1 — write a specification suppliers can actually quote

A quotable additive specification names the active substance and its guaranteed concentration or activity, the source form, the carrier, the physical form and particle size, thermostability and shelf life under your real storage conditions, packaging and pallet configuration, contaminant limits for heavy metals, dioxins and microbiology, and the analytical method used to verify the active. Two offers for 'phytase' with no stated FTU/g, matrix values or thermostability data are not comparable at all. Fix the specification first; every later step depends on it.

Step 2 — qualify the supplier and verify the registration

Require FAMI-QS as the baseline scheme for specialty feed ingredients, plus GMP+ B1/B2, FSSC 22000 or ISO 22000 where relevant to manufacturing and trade. Check the scope on the certificate: a trading scope does not cover production. For EU destinations, confirm the additive holds a valid authorisation under Regulation (EC) No 1831/2003 with the correct registration number and holder; for other markets confirm FDA/AAFCO, CFIA or the national feed register. Request the manufacturing site, not just the trading entity, and a recent third-party certificate of analysis.

Step 3 — run a structured additive RFQ

Issue the same written specification to every bidder, with a fixed quantity, delivery window, Incoterm, packaging and payment term, so that offers arrive comparable. Ask each supplier to state assay or activity, method, batch shelf life, country of manufacture, registration number, minimum order quantity, lead time and validity of the price. Invite at least three qualified sources per line, including one outside your usual region, and keep a second approved source live even when you do not buy from it.

Step 4 — compare on delivered cost per unit of active

Divide the landed cost — ex-works or CFR price plus freight, insurance, duty, port and inland handling, and financing over the payment term — by the guaranteed activity or assay, then apply the inclusion rate your formulation requires. A higher-concentration enzyme or a hydroxy trace mineral with better bioavailability frequently wins on ration cost while losing on price per kilogram. Factor in expected activity loss through conditioning and pelleting, and the shelf-life risk on slow-moving lines.

Premix or straights: where the economics turn

Buying straights and premixing in-house is the lowest raw cost and gives full formula confidentiality and control, but it demands micro-dosing accuracy, a validated mixer with proven coefficient of variation, disciplined storage and in-house QC. A purchased or tolled premix transfers that risk and cuts SKU count at a service margin of roughly 5–15%. A common split works well: buy high-volume amino acids and macro minerals as straights, and buy vitamins and trace elements as a premix because of their sensitivity, small inclusion and stability requirements.

Quality risks specific to additives — and how to control them

The recurring failures are under-declared assay, substitution of a chelated source with a cheaper inorganic salt, carrier dilution, activity loss in enzymes and vitamins through heat and moisture, caking and segregation of micro-ingredients, heavy-metal or dioxin contamination in mineral sources, and expired or absent registration. Control them with independent sampling and assay on every new supplier and periodically thereafter, retained samples per batch, full batch traceability, and a documented audit of supplier certificates of analysis against your own independent results.

Lead times, coverage and market volatility

Amino acid, vitamin and enzyme supply is concentrated in relatively few manufacturing sites, so a single plant outage, energy shock or export restriction can move prices sharply within weeks. Imported container lead times of 6–12 weeks are normal, longer for coated or specialty forms. Most mills hold 4–8 weeks of cover on critical lines, contract 3–6 months forward on the highest-value ones, and keep a qualified alternate source trialled so production is never hostage to one plant.
