46% vs 48% protein: choose the grade by ration, not by label
Standard 46% crude protein soybean meal retains part of the hull fraction, carrying roughly 6–7% crude fibre and lower metabolisable energy. Dehulled 48% 'high-pro' meal drops crude fibre to about 3–3.5% and raises energy density. Monogastric rations — broilers, layers, young pigs and most aqua feed — generally show a lower total ration cost with 48% meal because you buy more digestible lysine and energy per tonne of freight. Ruminant and lower-density diets frequently justify 46%. Run both grades through your least-cost formulation with real freight to your gate before deciding; the answer changes with every freight cycle.
Moisture: the specification that silently costs the most
Contract 12.0–12.5% maximum moisture. Every point above that is water you paid protein prices for, and it raises the risk of caking, heating and mould growth in transit and in silo — a serious exposure for containerised cargo crossing the tropics. Define moisture at both load port and discharge, name the analytical method, and agree a price adjustment or rejection threshold in the contract rather than negotiating it after a dispute arises.
The full quality specification
A complete soybean meal specification states crude protein minimum (and whether as-is or dry basis), moisture maximum, crude fibre maximum, oil, ash, sand and silica limits, urease activity, KOH protein solubility, trypsin inhibitor activity, and total plus reactive lysine. Add food-safety limits for aflatoxin B1 and total aflatoxins, salmonella-negative certification, foreign-matter tolerance, GMO or non-GMO status, origin, and the quality systems required — GMP+ B2, ISO 22000, FAMI-QS or FSSC 22000. Vague contracts are where margin is lost.
Heat processing: urease and KOH solubility
Raw soybeans contain trypsin inhibitors that must be destroyed by toasting, but over-toasting damages lysine through Maillard reactions and can make a 48% meal nutritionally inferior to a well-processed 46%. Two inexpensive tests bracket the acceptable window: urease activity of 0.02–0.30 pH rise and KOH protein solubility of 73–85%. Make both mandatory on the certificate of analysis for every lot, and spot-check independently.
Origin selection: Brazil, Argentina, the US, India and Ukraine
Argentina's crush industry is oriented toward export meal and is a reliable source of high-protein dehulled grades. Brazil offers the largest volumes and expanding domestic crush, with seasonal freight and logistics constraints around harvest peaks. United States origin is chosen where documentation, consistency and identity preservation carry weight. India and Ukraine serve non-GMO and regional demand at smaller parcel sizes. Choose origin on delivered cost per unit of digestible protein, GMO policy in your market, vessel availability and payment terms — not on the headline FOB number.
Bulk vessel versus containerised shipment
Bulk parcels of 3,000–50,000 tonnes deliver the lowest freight cost per tonne but require port silo access, sufficient draft, discharge equipment and working capital for a full cargo. Containerised meal in 25 kg bags or one-tonne big bags fits buyers in the 25–2,000 tonne range, allows staged arrival matched to consumption, and limits demurrage and storage exposure, typically at a USD 20–60 per tonne premium. Mid-sized mills often run a bulk base load supplemented by containers to cover gaps and quality trials.
Contracts, Incoterms, inspection and payment
Trade on GAFTA or FOSFA standard terms with a named independent surveyor such as SGS, Intertek or Control Union performing sampling, sealing and analysis at load and discharge. CFR or CIF simplifies budgeting for first-time importers; FOB lowers landed cost when you have your own freight capability. Payment is usually irrevocable letter of credit, cash against documents, or open account for established counterparties. Set out the arbitration forum, tolerance clauses and quality-deviation price adjustments before signing.
Comparing offers on true landed cost
Never compare soybean meal quotes on price per tonne. Normalise every offer to delivered cost per unit of digestible protein at your mill gate: FOB or CFR price, freight, insurance, duty and VAT treatment, port handling, inland transport, bagging, financing cost over the payment period, and the formulation value of the actual protein, energy and lysine content. A USD 15 per tonne cheaper offer routinely turns out to be the more expensive one once moisture, fibre and freight parity are applied.
