Suppliers can and do adjust any of those four levers to reach a lower headline price per tonne of premix while delivering less vitamin activity into your feed. Insist on declaration per tonne of finished feed
Ask every bidder to declare each vitamin in international units or milligrams and each trace element as the element (not the salt) per kilogram of finished feed at the recommended inclusion rate, alongside the source compound used for each. A premix declared per kilogram of premix at an undisclosed inclusion rate is unquotable: halving the inclusion rate halves the delivered activity while making the price per tonne of premix look competitive. Convert every offer to cost per tonne of finished feed before you look at anything else.
Overage, stability and the real shelf life
Vitamins A, D3, E, K3 and the B-group degrade at different rates under heat, humidity, and contact with trace mineral salts and choline chloride — which is why many mills separate the vitamin and mineral portions. Ask what overage is built in, what stability data supports the claimed shelf life under tropical storage conditions if that is your reality, whether protected or coated vitamin forms are used, and what activity remains at end of shelf life. A premix that meets label on the day of manufacture and fails at month six is a quality failure you will discover only in flock performance.
Carrier, particle size and mixability
The carrier (limestone, wheat middlings, rice hulls, silica) affects density, flow, segregation risk and mixing uniformity at low inclusion. Specify the carrier, particle size distribution, bulk density and an acceptable coefficient of variation in a mixer test. For inclusion rates below about 1 kg per tonne of feed, ask for a tracer or marker check and validate uniformity in your own mixer before the first commercial batch.
Premix or straights: rebuild the offer to find the margin
To judge a premix price, rebuild it: multiply each declared component by its inclusion and your own delivered cost per unit of active, add the carrier and packaging, then compare against the premix price at label rate. The gap is the service margin — typically 5–15%. Weigh it against micro-dosing accuracy, mixer validation, extra SKUs, storage discipline and QC capacity you would need in-house. Below roughly 5% the premix is usually cheaper for a mid-size mill; above 15% it rarely is.
