Start with your toxin profile, not the product brochure
Test your incoming raw materials — maize, DDGS, wheat, by-products — for the toxins that actually occur in your origins and season: aflatoxin B1, deoxynivalenol, zearalenone, fumonisins, ochratoxin A and T-2. The result determines the technology. Adsorbent clays are effective against aflatoxin and, to a degree, ergot alkaloids; polar trichothecenes are poorly adsorbed and are addressed by biotransformation enzymes or specific microbial strains; yeast cell wall products act broadly but with a different efficacy profile. Buying before testing is buying blind.
Evidence to demand from every bidder
Ask for in vitro adsorption data at both feed pH and intestinal pH — a product that binds at pH 3 but releases at pH 6.5 has done nothing — and for in vivo trial data in your species and production phase with biomarker or performance endpoints. Ask which toxins the claim covers and at what inclusion rate. In the EU, note the regulatory distinction: substances for reduction of mycotoxin contamination are an authorised functional group under Regulation (EC) No 1831/2003, and claims outside an authorisation are marketing, not a specification.
Risks specific to this category
Clay-based products carry a dioxin and heavy-metal risk from the mineral source itself — demand batch dioxin and dioxin-like PCB results, not a generic statement. Broad-spectrum adsorbents can also bind vitamins, trace minerals and some medications; ask for data on nutrient binding at your inclusion rate. Finally, watch the inclusion rate: a product at half the price per kilogram dosed at three times the rate is the more expensive option, and a high-inclusion clay displaces nutritionally useful material from the ration.
Buying and contracting
Specify the active technology, the carrier, the inclusion rate range, moisture, particle size, dioxin and heavy-metal limits, Salmonella absence and shelf life. Compare bids as cost per tonne of finished feed at the recommended label rate, not per kilogram of product. Because toxin pressure is seasonal, contract flexibly: agree a price and a qualification, keep a second technology approved for a different toxin profile, and be ready to switch inclusion rates when harvest analysis moves.
