Buyer considerations

Advantages

  • The most concentrated energy source in a formula (Feedipedia: fat raises energy to levels other ingredients cannot reach)
  • Reduces dust in mash and wear on pellet dies (Feedipedia)
  • Bypass forms are designed to pass the rumen for dairy diets — compare them on the product type each bidder declares

Constraints & risks

  • Rancidity: animal fats need an antioxidant; Feedipedia cites 125–200 g per tonne of fat
  • Quality varies by source and process — free fatty acids, moisture and impurities must be capped in the contract
  • Liquid fats need heated storage and dosing at the mill

What to specify in a feed-fat or bypass-fat RFQ

FeedMatch publishes no typical analysis for blended fats: values depend on the source and process. These are the parameters each bidder must state so offers can be compared.

ParameterWhy it mattersWhat to write in the RFQ
Product type and fat sourceTallow, lard, vegetable fat blend, acid oil, hydrogenated or fractionated palm fat and calcium soaps behave differently in the animal and at the millName the type; require the declared source of every component in a blend
Total fatThe paid-for energy carrierMinimum, with the analysis method
Free fatty acids (FFA)Indicates hydrolysis and affects digestibility and handlingMaximum, % of fat
Moisture, impurities and unsaponifiables (MIU)Non-fat material you pay for at the price of fatMaximum for each, or combined MIU maximum
Melting point / titre or iodine valueFeedipedia classes animal fats as tallows (solid above 40 °C), lards (solid at 20–40 °C) or oils (liquid below 20 °C); this decides heating and dosingState the range your storage and dosing system can handle
Oxidation status and antioxidantRancid fat is unpalatable and can harm animals (Feedipedia)Peroxide value maximum, antioxidant type and dose on the CoA
ContaminantsDioxins and PCBs are monitored in feed fats in the EU (Reg. 225/2012)Dioxin/PCB test report per lot or per your destination rule
Form and packaging (bypass fat)Prills, powder or flakes; bag sizeForm, bag weight, pallet configuration and storage temperature at your site

Requirements differ by destination; confirm limits with your nutritionist and the destination's feed authority.

Feed Fats and Bypass Fat sourcing questions buyers should settle before an RFQ

These questions turn a broad market search into a comparable procurement brief. Values, doses, substitutions and performance expectations must be approved by the buyer's qualified nutrition, veterinary, feed-science, safety and regulatory advisers.

What should a feed fats and bypass fat RFQ specify?

State the exact commodity or oil, processing grade, moisture or free-fatty-acid limits where relevant, energy basis used by your formulator, contamination limits and the intended species or feed phase.

How should buyers compare feed fats and bypass fat supplier quotations?

Normalise offers to the same delivered quality and energy basis, including moisture, losses, testing, freight, duties and handling. Ask your formulator to approve substitutions before comparing them as equivalents.

Which documents should a feed fats and bypass fat supplier provide?

Request a current specification, technical and safety data, recent batch certificates of analysis, manufacturing and feed-safety certification, destination registration where required, allergen or GMO status where relevant, traceability details, shelf-life evidence and a clear procedure for non-conforming lots. Verify documents and claims before approval.

What changes feed fats and bypass fat availability and the price offered to buyers?

The quoted result can change with feedstock or active-material availability, production concentration, plant outages, energy and freight costs, packaging, order size, Incoterm, destination registration, testing requirements and delivery window. FeedMatch does not publish a live price; buyers should request a firm, time-bound quotation against one controlled specification.

Official standards and regulatory references

Confirm the current rule for the exact product, target species and destination market before contracting. Private assurance schemes may support supplier qualification but do not replace applicable law.

Storage, packaging, transport & handling

Shelf life

Cereals and energy by-products typically hold 4–8 months at 12–14% moisture with active aeration; high-oil by-products are shorter and oxidation-limited.

Storage recommendations
  • — Aerate and monitor temperature at multiple silo depths
  • — Control moisture migration — hot spots form before visible mould appears
  • — Maintain insect and rodent monitoring with documented treatments
Packaging options
  • — Bulk silo or vessel parcels
  • — Bulk bags for intermediate volumes
  • — Bagged only for small or remote operations
Transportation considerations
  • — Verify prior cargo in bulk holds; grain readiness inspection before loading
  • — Ventilate to prevent condensation on long tropical routes
  • — Record fumigation treatments and residues
Handling best practices
  • — Manage dust — grain and by-product dust is both a loss and an explosion risk
  • — Control grinding to the target geometric mean diameter for the species
  • — Blend by-products gradually to keep diet energy stable

Procurement considerations

  • —Set mycotoxin limits by destination regulation and target species, with a defined incremental sampling plan
  • —Agree moisture adjustment scales rather than simple rejection thresholds
  • —Confirm harvest year and storage history, not only origin
Common industry standards
  • — GMP+ FSA / FAMI-QS feed safety scheme certification of the producing site
  • — ISO/IEC 17025 accredited analysis for contractual and safety parameters
  • — HACCP plan covering the specific material and process route
  • — Codex Alimentarius Code of Practice on Good Animal Feeding

Typical risks & common mistakes

Typical risks
  • — Hot-spot mycotoxin contamination missed by grab sampling
  • — Energy value drifting between harvest years and origins
  • — Fumigant residues and insect infestation entering the mill
Common mistakes
  • — Grab-sampling bulk cargo for mycotoxin decisions
  • — Assuming published energy tables represent the delivered cargo
  • — Ignoring harvest year when comparing offers from the same origin

Frequently asked questions

What is bypass fat?

Bypass (rumen-protected) fat is a fat product designed to pass through the rumen largely unchanged so it is digested further down the tract. Commercial forms include calcium soaps of fatty acids and hydrogenated or fractionated palm-based fats. Ask each bidder to declare the product type and its analysis, because the forms are not interchangeable.

How do I compare feed-fat offers?

Put every offer on the same basis: same product type, total fat, maximum free fatty acids and MIU, the same delivery point and Incoterm. Then compare delivered cost per tonne of fat actually delivered, not per tonne invoiced — MIU is non-fat material you pay for.

Does FeedMatch publish bypass fat prices?

No. FeedMatch publishes no prices. Prices come only from dated supplier quotations on your specification and delivery point; feed-fat requests have no minimum order value.

How much fat can a dairy diet carry?

Feedipedia notes that research on added fat in dairy feeds advises keeping the total fat content of the diet within 8–10%. Your nutritionist sets the inclusion for your herd.

For commercial farm feed buyers

Buying feed fats and bypass fat for a commercial farm

Best for
Commercial farms, integrators, distributors and feed buyers sourcing feed fats and bypass fat and related feed, additives or nutrition supply on a recurring commercial scale — not pet food, hobby farms or backyard quantities.
Animal species covered
Broilers and layers, dairy and beef cattle, pigs, tilapia, salmon and shrimp, plus sheep and goats on request.
Typical feed buyer needs
A written specification, suppliers whose documents show they can hold that specification, comparable pricing on the same delivery terms, documented quality (CoA, certifications) and a supply schedule that matches production.
Bulk feed and recurring supply
Most requests are bulk or big-bag volumes on monthly or quarterly contracts. Volume per delivery, storage capacity on farm and contract length change price more than the headline per-tonne quote.
Feed additives and premix
Premix, amino acids, minerals, vitamins, enzymes, organic acids, toxin binders and other additives can be quoted alongside compound feed or ingredients so one supplier comparison covers the whole ration.
What affects feed cost
Raw-material origin and specification, inclusion rates, freight and Incoterms, packaging, order volume, payment terms, currency and certification requirements. Landed cost, not ex-works price, decides the winner.
RFQ checklist
Species and production stage, tonnes per month, target specification, delivery port or farm location, packaging, required certifications, first delivery date and contract duration.
Supplier matching process
You define the requirement, FeedMatch structures the RFQ, sends it to relevant qualified suppliers, and returns comparable offers side by side so you can negotiate on equal terms.
Buyer is not charged
Farm buyers are not charged to submit a requirement, receive matched suppliers or compare quotes.

FeedMatch helps farm buyers compare feed suppliers, nutrition providers, additives suppliers and related solutions. FeedMatch is an intermediary and does not manufacture feed or provide financing directly.
