Ingredient Lot Comparison Calculator — After Quality Deductions
Compare two offered lots of a feed ingredient after your contract's protein and moisture deductions and rejection limits: net price, cost per dry tonne and per protein point.
How do you compare two ingredient lots with different quality?
Apply your contract's own deductions to each lot's analysis — a discount per protein point below spec and per moisture point above spec — and drop any lot that breaks a rejection limit such as maximum moisture or aflatoxin. Then compare the net price per tonne of dry matter, not the offered price: a cheaper lot with more water or less protein can cost more for what it actually delivers.

Deduction breakdown per tonne
| Item | Lot A | Lot B |
|---|---|---|
| Protein deduction | USD 0.00 | USD 9.60 |
| Moisture deduction | USD 0.00 | USD 5.00 |
| Cost per protein point | USD 9.78 | USD 9.50 |

What this tool calculates
- Applies your protein and moisture deduction rates to each lot's certificate of analysis.
- Flags lots that exceed your moisture or aflatoxin rejection limits instead of pricing them.
- Compares net price, cost per dry-matter tonne and cost per protein point.
What it cannot do
- It holds no prices, market deduction scales or regulatory limits — every term is from your own contract.
- It does not judge nutritional value beyond protein and moisture (amino acids, energy, fibre, other contaminants).
- It does not replace an independent sample analysis or a lab certificate.
Who this is for
- Feed mills choosing between two offered lots of the same ingredient
- Ingredient buyers checking whether a discount covers a quality shortfall
- Procurement teams preparing a specification for an RFQ

Methodology
Protein deduction = max(0, spec protein − lot protein) × rate per point. Moisture deduction = max(0, lot moisture − spec moisture) × rate per point. Net price = offered price − deductions. Cost per dry tonne = net price ÷ (1 − moisture %). Cost per protein point = net price ÷ protein %. A lot above either rejection limit is excluded from the comparison.
Assumptions
- Prices are delivered (landed) per tonne on the same basis for both lots — use the landed cost calculator first if offers are FOB.
- Deductions are linear per percentage point, as in many trade contracts; tiered or fractional scales need the contract table.
- Default values are illustrative example inputs, not market prices, standard deduction scales or legal limits.
Worked example — illustrative inputs
Inputs
- Spec: 46% protein min, 12.5% moisture max; deductions 8 USD per protein point and 5 USD per moisture point
- Lot A: 455 USD/t, 46.5% protein, 12.0% moisture · Lot B: 440 USD/t, 44.8% protein, 13.5% moisture
Outputs
- Lot A net 455 USD/t, about 517 USD per dry tonne
- Lot B net about 425 USD/t after 15 USD of deductions, about 492 USD per dry tonne
How to read it. With these example terms Lot B stays cheaper per dry tonne even after deductions, but it delivers less protein; check the cost per protein point and your formulation before choosing. The inputs are illustrations only.
Limitations
- Indicative comparison, not a quality ruling. Final settlement follows your contract, sampling method and the agreed laboratory.
- Feed contaminant limits differ by country and species; confirm the applicable limit with your regulator or quality team.
All figures are indicative planning estimates for budgeting and supplier discussion. They are not quotations, guarantees or professional engineering, nutritional, legal or financial advice. Have results reviewed by the responsible professionals before you commit capital.
Sources and data

- Method: the arithmetic described under "Methodology" above, applied to your inputs. No external price, nutrient or supplier database is used.
