Mycotoxins

In short

Mycotoxins are toxic fungal metabolites — aflatoxins, DON, zearalenone, fumonisins, ochratoxin A, T-2/HT-2 — that form in the field and in storage and are regulated with species-specific limits.

Measured as: µg/kg (ppb) by LC-MS/MS (reference), HPLC, or ELISA/lateral flow for screening

Distribution is extremely heterogeneous

Mycotoxin contamination occurs in hot spots. Most of the total error in a mycotoxin result comes from sampling, not from the laboratory. A statistically valid incremental sampling plan is more important than the analytical method chosen.

Screening versus reference methods

Lateral flow and ELISA are appropriate for intake screening and are fast and inexpensive. LC-MS/MS is the reference for contractual disputes, regulatory positions and multi-toxin profiles, including masked and emerging toxins.

Limits are species- and jurisdiction-specific

Legal maxima and guidance values differ between destination markets and between target species. The binding limit is the one in force where the feed will be fed, which is not necessarily where it was bought.

What to verify

  • Sampling plan — number of increments and composite size
  • Method used and its limit of quantification
  • Which regulatory limits apply in the destination market and for the target species
  • Storage and ventilation history since production

Typical risks

  • Performance loss and immune suppression before clinical signs
  • Regulatory detention at import
  • Milk and tissue residues in dairy and food chains

Common mistakes

  • Grab-sampling a bulk cargo
  • Screening only for aflatoxin when the risk profile is DON or fumonisin
  • Assuming a load-port certificate covers post-shipment storage growth

Frequently asked questions

Do binders remove the need for specification limits?

No. Binders and modifiers are a mitigation tool with toxin-specific efficacy. Contractual limits, sampling discipline and storage control remain the primary defence.
