Oilseed meals (soybean, rapeseed/canola, sunflower, cottonseed, groundnut, palm kernel) dominate global volume and are by-products of oil extraction, so their availability follows the crush margin rather than feed demand. Animal proteins (fish meal, poultry by-product meal, feather meal, blood and plasma products) supply dense, highly digestible amino acids plus functional value. Alternative proteins — insect meal, single-cell and fermentation proteins, algae — are contracted like specialty ingredients: small volumes, tight specifications and long qualification cycles.

How protein quality is actually determined

Crude protein is calculated from nitrogen (N × 6.25) and can be inflated by non-protein nitrogen, which is why nitrogen-only trading invites adulteration. What a formulator uses is the digestible amino acid supply: lysine, methionine plus cystine, threonine and tryptophan, corrected by species-specific digestibility coefficients. Heat during desolventising and toasting sets that value. Too little heat leaves trypsin inhibitors, lectins and glucosinolates active; too much heat causes Maillard reactions that lock lysine into indigestible complexes while total lysine on the certificate of analysis stays unchanged.

Anti-nutritional factors by raw material

Soybean products carry trypsin inhibitor and lectin risk when under-toasted. Rapeseed and canola carry glucosinolates. Cottonseed carries free gossypol, which is particularly limiting for layers and monogastrics. Groundnut meal is the highest aflatoxin risk of the group. Palm kernel and sunflower meal carry high fibre and variable shell content that dilutes energy. None of these disqualifies an origin — each simply defines a specification limit and a test that belongs in the contract.

What drives availability and price

Oilseed meals are priced off the crush complex: oil demand, biodiesel policy, crush capacity and origin harvest. Fish meal availability follows fishing quotas and El Niño cycles. Freight and origin premiums often move the delivered cost more than the raw commodity does, so comparing FOB numbers across origins without a landed-cost model is misleading. Sustainability certification (deforestation-free, chain-of-custody) is increasingly a separate premium rather than a default inclusion.
