Feed formulation cost and ingredient comparison

Formula cost per tonne is the sum of each ingredient's price multiplied by its inclusion share. Enter your own quotes and lab values; the result is a preliminary cost check, not a formulation.

Method reviewed: October 13, 2026 · Enter your own figures — this tool contains no default prices, nutrient values or benchmarks.

Feed ingredients for a buyer's cost comparison

Two decisions: feed specification and production equipment

Formulation-cost arithmetic checks an approved inclusion set: cost per metric tonne = Σ(price per tonne × inclusion % ÷ 100). One tonne is 1,000 kg; keep one currency and one delivered-price basis. It does not set a complete diet or optimize nutrient constraints.

Equipment selection starts with the approved feed matrix, feed form and required tonnes/hour at every process stage. Pellet mills, extruders and silos need separate acceptance conditions; motor power alone does not demonstrate complete-line output.

When evaluating formulation software, ask the vendor to demonstrate editable lot analyses, species/stage constraints, versioned prices, minimum/maximum inclusions and infeasibility on the same test dataset. Export, sensitivity reports and ERP integrations must be demonstrated, not assumed to exist in FeedMatch.

  • Poultry and swine: approved stage, amino-acid/energy basis and feed form.
  • Cattle: forage contribution, fibre and the complete ration reviewed by a ruminant nutritionist.
  • Aquaculture: exact species/stage, digestibility basis and floating/sinking requirement.
  • All species: dated ingredient analyses, units, permitted use and nutritionist approval before production.

Your inputs

Ingredient 1
Ingredient 2
Measured feed conversion (optional)

Use the same cohort, period and weight basis. Record mortality and transfers separately; do not treat removed animals as zero starting weight. For milk or eggs, use the output-based FCR tool instead. Ingredient percentages cannot predict FCR.

FCR = feed consumed ÷ net gain. Ingredient cost / kg gain = FCR × blend cost per tonne ÷ 1,000. Processing, shrinkage and delivery costs are excluded unless included in your prices. No benchmark or improvement is assumed.

Formula and method

  • Cost per t = Σ (price per t × inclusion % ÷ 100)
  • Blend protein % = Σ (protein % × inclusion % ÷ 100)
  • Cost per protein point = cost per t ÷ blend protein %
  • Inclusions must total exactly 100%.

FeedMatch is supplier-neutral: our team reviews each request, contacts suppliers and normalizes their bids. Buyers are not connected directly to manufacturers. Mill and equipment projects start at USD 250,000.

Worked example: costing a simple four-ingredient mix

A buyer prices a mix of 60% maize, 30% soybean meal, 7% wheat bran and 3% mineral/vitamin premix, using the delivered price per tonne and the crude protein (CP %) and energy (ME, kcal/kg) values from each supplier's certificate of analysis.

Mix cost per tonne338
Crude protein of mix19.69 %
ME of mix (kcal/kg)2,740
Cost per point of CP17.17
Cost share: Maize46.2 %
Cost share: Soybean meal41.7 %
Cost share: Wheat bran4.1 %
Cost share: Mineral/vitamin premix8 %

Soybean meal is 30% of the mix but over 40% of its cost, so it is where a price change matters most. This only costs a mix; it does not check that the mix meets the animals' nutrient needs, which is your nutritionist's job.

All figures are invented to show the method; they are not market prices, quotes or a recommended diet. Use your own quotes and certificates.

Units by country and convention

Inclusion is % of the mix (must total 100). Prices are per metric tonne delivered. CP is % as fed.

Energy in MJ/kg (EU, Australia)
kcal/kg = MJ/kg × 239.0. Use one unit for every ingredient.
Energy in kcal/kg (Americas, Asia)
Poultry tables usually use AMEn or ME in kcal/kg; pig tables may use NE. Do not mix systems in one calculation.
Dry matter vs as fed
Certificates may report on dry-matter basis; convert to as fed: as fed = DM value × DM% ÷ 100.
Bags
Premix and minerals are often sold in 20, 25 or 50 kg bags: price per tonne = bag price × 1,000 ÷ bag weight.

What to do with your result

  • 1. Have your nutritionist confirm the mix meets your animals' requirements.
  • 2. Turn each ingredient's quote into a delivered price with the landed-cost calculator.
  • 3. Send a request with the ingredient list and specification to get comparable offers.

More buyer questions

Does this tool formulate a diet?
No. It costs a mix you enter and reports its average protein and energy. Nutrient requirements, amino acids, minerals and safe inclusion limits must be set by a qualified nutritionist.
Why is cost per point of protein useful?
It shows how much you pay for each percentage point of crude protein in the mix, which helps compare protein sources at different prices and protein levels.
Where do the ingredient values come from?
Use the certificate of analysis for the lot you are buying. Book values are only a starting point; real lots vary in moisture and protein.

Questions

Does this tool tell me what formula to feed?
No. It only adds up the prices and nutrient values you enter. A qualified nutritionist must set and approve the formulation.
Where should the prices come from?
Use current written supplier quotes on the same delivery basis (for example all FCA mill or all CIF port) so the comparison is like-for-like.
Buyer guide

How to use this result

Compare ingredient offers on the same basis — cost per unit of protein, energy or dry matter — using the prices and analyses you enter, so the cheapest tonne is not mistaken for the best value.

Assumptions and limits

  • Prices and nutrient analyses are your inputs from each supplier's quote and certificate of analysis.
  • Compare offers on the same delivered Incoterm and currency.
  • The tool does not check supplier reliability or quality claims.
Animal feed raw ingredients — corn, soybean meal, wheat, sunflower meal and fish meal — weighed for a least-cost blend

Protein ingredient substitution check: cost per kg of protein and per MJ of energy

To compare a substitute (for example lupins or canola meal) with soybean meal, divide each delivered price per tonne by its lab-tested crude protein and energy. The cheaper ingredient per kg of protein is not automatically the better buy: amino acids, fibre, anti-nutritional factors, mycotoxins and the species and stage you feed decide whether a swap works, and that decision belongs to a qualified nutritionist.

Soybean meal, lupin seeds and canola meal side by side on a steel table with a sample bag and scoop
Reference ingredient (e.g. current soybean meal)
Candidate substitute

Arithmetic only, based on the numbers you enter. It does not formulate a diet, predict growth or health, or include live prices.

What to compare before switching

Delivered priceSame delivery basis and currency for both offers
Crude protein and dry matterLab certificate for the actual lot, not a brochure value
Digestible amino acidsLysine, methionine and threonine matter more than crude protein alone
EnergyUse the value for your species (poultry AME, pig NE, ruminant ME)
Fibre and anti-nutritional factorsAlkaloids in lupins, glucosinolates in canola, trypsin inhibitors in raw soy
Mycotoxins and contaminantsAsk for test results per lot against your local legal limits

Buyer checklist

  • Get written quotes for both ingredients on the same Incoterm and date.
  • Request a certificate of analysis for the lot offered, including moisture.
  • Ask your nutritionist which species and stages can use the substitute, and up to what level.
  • Agree a mycotoxin and contaminant testing plan with the supplier.
  • Run a small, monitored trial and track FCR and cost per kg of output before scaling up.
  • If data is missing, record it as unknown rather than using a guessed value.

Questions about ingredient substitution

Is a cheaper cost per kg of protein always a saving?

No. If the substitute has lower digestible amino acids or energy, the diet may need other ingredients to compensate, which can cancel the price gap.

Can I replace soybean meal with lupins?

Sometimes, partly, depending on species, stage, lupin variety and alkaloid level. A qualified nutritionist must decide the inclusion level.

Which energy value should I enter?

Use the energy system your nutritionist uses for that species, from the supplier's analysis or a reference database, and use the same system for both ingredients.

What if I don't have lab values?

Ask the supplier for a certificate of analysis. Until then treat the result as indicative only.

Does this calculate cost per kg of gain?

No. Cost per kg of gain depends on the whole diet and measured FCR; use the FCR calculator with your own records.
