FAT and SAT (acceptance tests)
Definition
A factory acceptance test (FAT) checks equipment at the supplier's works before shipping; a site acceptance test (SAT) checks the installed line at the buyer's site against agreed performance.
Why it matters
Clear FAT/SAT criteria tie payment milestones to verified performance instead of delivery alone.
When it affects procurement
When negotiating the contract, payment schedule and warranty start date.
Example
A contract links the final payment to a SAT showing rated t/h on two named recipes over an agreed run time.
Frequently asked questions
Who attends the FAT?
Usually the buyer or an inspector they appoint; agree attendance, test scope and costs in the contract.
