EPC / turnkey contract
Definition
In an EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) or turnkey contract, one contractor takes responsibility for design, supply, installation and commissioning of the whole plant.
Why it matters
A single responsible party simplifies interfaces, but 'turnkey' scope varies — civil works, silos, utilities and permits are often excluded.
When it affects procurement
When choosing between one turnkey contractor and several equipment suppliers.
Example
A buyer asks each turnkey bidder for a scope matrix listing what is included, excluded and buyer-supplied.
Frequently asked questions
Does turnkey always include buildings?
No. Always request a written scope matrix; civil works and utilities are common exclusions.
