Pellet durability index (PDI)
Definition
PDI is the percentage of pellets that stay whole after a standard tumbling test. It measures how well pellets survive handling, transport and feeding.
Why it matters
A PDI target written into the RFQ lets buyers compare pellet quality claims on one test method.
When it affects procurement
In acceptance criteria for a pellet line and in specifications for purchased pelleted feed.
Example
An RFQ names the test method and asks suppliers to state expected PDI per recipe at the rated throughput.
Frequently asked questions
Should the test method be named?
Yes. Different tumbling methods give different numbers, so state the method alongside any PDI target.
