  • State the intended species and inclusion rate — a 46% protein dehulled meal and a 44% hulled meal are not interchangeable in a least-cost formula.
  • Fix the moisture basis for every quality figure (as-is vs 12% moisture) before you compare two offers.
  • Decide whether you require non-GM / identity-preserved material, and accept that this narrows the origin list and carries a premium.
  • Set the delivery window, tolerance (typically ±5% or ±10% on quantity) and who declares the vessel or truck schedule.
  • Define the acceptance point: works, load port, discharge port or delivered warehouse. Quality risk transfers with it.

Spécifications déterminantes

ParamètreExigence typiquePourquoi c'est important pour l'acheteur
Crude protein44–48% (dry basis stated)The primary value driver and the usual basis for price adjustment clauses.
Moisture12% maxAbove ~12.5% storage moulding and heating risk rises sharply; also inflates apparent weight.
Crude fibre3.5–7%Distinguishes dehulled from hulled meal and caps energy dilution in monogastric diets.
Crude fat / oil0.5–2.5%Residual oil affects energy value and oxidative stability in storage.
Urease activity0.05–0.30 ΔpHIndicates under- or over-toasting; the key anti-nutritional-factor proxy.
KOH protein solubility73–85%Detects over-processing (heat damage) that urease alone will not reveal.
Sand / silica, foreign matter≤ 1.5% / ≤ 1%Direct adulteration and abrasion indicator.
Aflatoxin B1 / totalPer destination legal limitNon-negotiable compliance parameter at import.
SalmonellaAbsent in 25 gFeed-safety requirement in most regulated markets.
Certifications couramment demandées
  • GMP+ B2 or FAMI-QS / FSSC 22000 for the producing plant
  • ISO 22000 or HACCP plan with a documented scope covering the purchased product
  • Non-GM / IP certification where required (e.g. ProTerra, Danube Soya)
  • Sustainability schemes where a customer demands them (RTRS, RSPO for other categories)
  • Halal or Kosher certification where the finished feed requires it
Rapports de laboratoire à examiner
  • Certificate of Analysis per lot, naming the test methods (AOAC / ISO) and the laboratory
  • Independent surveyor report on sampling, weight and quality at load and discharge
  • Mycotoxin panel from an accredited laboratory, not a rapid strip test alone
  • Salmonella and Enterobacteriaceae results with the sampling plan described
  • Heavy metals and pesticide residues on first shipments from a new origin
Conditionnement
  • Bulk vessel or container liner for large volumes — lowest cost, highest handling and contamination diligence
  • 50 kg PP woven bags for distribution markets; specify GSM, liner and stitching
  • 1,000–1,250 kg big bags with liners where warehouse handling is mechanised
  • Marking requirements: lot, production date, producer, net weight, batch traceability code
Transport
  • Agree Incoterms 2020 precisely (FOB, CFR, CIF, DAP) — it determines who insures and who bears demurrage
  • Confirm the vessel or container is food/feed-grade and previously carried compatible cargo
  • Specify fumigation, ventilation and moisture-monitoring expectations during transit
  • Budget port charges, quarantine inspection, storage and inland haulage in the landed cost, not after
Stockage
  • Keep bulk under 12% moisture and monitor temperature at multiple depths in the pile or silo
  • First-in first-out rotation with a maximum practical residence of about 3 months in warm climates
  • Protect against condensation in containers moving between climate zones
  • Keep a retained sample of every lot until the material is fully consumed and performance verified

Risques d'achat

Protein shortfall on arrival

Maîtrise: Quality determined at discharge by an appointed independent surveyor, with a pro-rata price adjustment formula and a rejection threshold in the contract.

Heat-damaged (over-toasted) meal

Maîtrise: Contract KOH solubility alongside urease; a compliant urease value can still hide over-processing.

Mycotoxin exceedance at import

Maîtrise: Pre-shipment accredited testing plus an import-conformity clause placing the compliance obligation on the seller.

Weight and moisture disputes

Maîtrise: Draft survey or weighbridge protocol agreed in advance, with moisture-adjusted settlement weight.

Counterparty default in a rising market

Maîtrise: Payment instrument matched to counterparty risk, performance security, and split shipments with new suppliers.

Erreurs d'achat fréquentes
  • Comparing offers on headline protein without normalising the moisture basis
  • Accepting a certificate of analysis produced by the seller with no independent verification
  • Leaving 'quality final at load port' in the contract while paying on arrival
  • Ignoring urease and KOH solubility because the protein number looks strong
  • Not budgeting demurrage, quarantine and inland haulage in the comparison

Questions fréquentes

What protein level should I buy?
Buy the protein level your formulation actually values. Dehulled meal at 47–48% usually costs more per tonne but less per unit of digestible protein for monogastrics; 44% hulled meal can be cheaper in ruminant diets where fibre is not penalised. Run both through least-cost formulation before deciding.
Is urease activity enough to judge processing?
No. Urease detects under-toasting. Over-toasting destroys lysine availability while urease looks perfect. Contract both urease activity and KOH protein solubility, and add reactive lysine testing for high-value diets.
Should quality be final at load port or discharge?
Whichever you choose, align it with payment. Quality final at load port with payment on arrival leaves you paying for a cargo you cannot reject. Most buyers appoint an independent surveyor at both ends and settle on discharge analysis.
How many suppliers should I quote?
Enough to see a real market range — typically three qualified producers or traders per origin. Comparability matters more than count: identical specification, identical Incoterm, identical payment terms.
