Insulation classes and materials
PIR (polyisocyanurate) and PUR (polyurethane) sandwich panels dominate commercial poultry: high R-value per mm, integral vapour barrier, structural strength. Glasswool with membrane is cheaper but heavier and more moisture-sensitive. Spray polyurethane foam suits retrofits with irregular geometry. EPS is common in low-cost markets but has poor fire performance.
Target R-values by climate zone
Cold climate (< 0°C winter design): roof R-6.0, walls R-5.0 (SI m²K/W). Temperate: roof R-4.5, walls R-3.5. Hot arid: roof R-4.0, walls R-2.5 (matches cooling load). Hot humid: roof R-4.5 with reflective outer surface, walls R-3.0 plus vapour barrier. Under-spec leads to condensation and roof drips at every temperature swing.
Condensation and vapour control
Every insulated poultry house needs a continuous vapour barrier on the warm side of the insulation. Broken vapour barriers cause interstitial condensation, rot, corrosion and R-value collapse. Sandwich panels solve this by design; separate insulation + membrane systems fail if not sealed at every joint and penetration.
Panel joints, penetrations and vermin
The panel spec is often good; the joint detailing is where houses fail. Insist on: continuous mastic at every panel joint, sealed penetration collars for every fan, inlet, feed line and electrical entry, and rodent-proof metal cladding at the base of every wall. Rodents in wall insulation destroy performance and carry salmonella.
Energy payback
