
Poultry Manure Management: Belt Drying, Scraping and In-House Storage
Manure is either a compliance headache or a revenue stream — the system design decides which. This guide covers the four commercial architectures for handling layer, breeder and broiler manure, and the environmental permits that shape the choice.

Manure output baseline
Layers: 130–150 g wet manure/hen/day at ~75% moisture. Broilers: 50–80 g/bird/day, plus bedding. A 100,000-layer flock produces ~14 tonnes wet manure daily — plan storage, transport and end-use before commissioning the farm.
Belt drying — the modern layer standard
Manure belts under cages or aviary tiers collect droppings; forced-air drying to 30–50% moisture happens in-belt or in a dedicated drying tunnel. Advantages: 80% volume reduction, dramatic ammonia cut inside the house (< 5 ppm typical), storable and saleable output. CAPEX $4–8/hen.
Deep-pit and shallow-pit systems
Older layer designs use a below-cage pit collecting manure for 6–12 months. Cheap CAPEX but ammonia and fly control are chronic issues, and market for wet manure is limited. Rarely specified in new commercial projects since 2015.
Broiler litter and cake-out
Broilers produce a mixed litter+manure cake removed between flocks. Best practice: partial cake-out (top 3–5 cm) between flocks in a 6-flock/year cycle, full clean-out annually. In-house composting during the empty period reduces pathogen load before spreading.
End-use: fertiliser, compost, biogas
Dried layer manure sells at $30–120/t depending on region. Composting adds value and reduces pathogen risk. Anaerobic digestion (biogas) is economic above roughly 500,000 layers or 4 million broilers/year — see the /energy-efficient-poultry-farms hub. In many jurisdictions manure is regulated as agricultural waste; permits are non-optional.
