Manual collection: only defensible below 20,000 hens
Manual collection from floor or nest boxes requires roughly 1 labour hour per 3,000–4,000 eggs. Egg damage rate typically 2–4%, dirty-egg rate 5–15% depending on nest hygiene. Below 20,000 hens the CAPEX savings can outweigh labour cost; above that scale, automation pays back inside 24 months in most markets.
Belt collection under nests and cages
Rubber or plastic belts under nest boxes (cage-free) or cage tiers convey eggs to a longitudinal cross-conveyor. Standard damage rate 0.5–1.5% with correct belt speed and tension. The single most common failure: belts not centred and rubbing against side rails — inspect weekly.
Central conveyor and elevator systems
Multi-tier layer barns use vertical elevators (rod, chain or basket) to consolidate eggs from every tier onto a single farm-level conveyor. Enables direct feed into on-farm packing or off-farm truck loading. Adds $8–15/hen CAPEX but eliminates manual handling and enables per-house traceability.
Damage rate — the KPI to write into the contract
Modern belt + elevator systems deliver 0.5–1.0% total damage (cracks + leaks) at farm exit. Insist on a guaranteed maximum damage rate in the contract, measured during a 30-day acceptance test with independent sampling. Anything over 1.5% is a system defect, not normal wear.
Integration with packing centre
Farm collection speed must match packing centre inlet capacity. Standard commercial packing: 30,000, 60,000 or 120,000 eggs/hour. Sizing the farm conveyor at 60% of packer capacity leaves headroom for peak-lay days. See the egg packing centre project page for downstream design.
