Controller class matters
Three commercial classes: (1) staged relay controllers — legacy, cheap, adequate only for small natural-ventilation houses; (2) PID/variable-speed controllers with static-pressure loop — the commercial default for tunnel houses; (3) full-house management systems that integrate climate, feed, water, weighing and lighting into one interface with cloud data. Class 2 minimum for any commercial project.
Sensor topology — the specification most RFQs miss
A single temperature sensor at controller level is a bird-welfare risk. Best practice: 3–5 zone temperature sensors distributed lengthwise, 2 humidity sensors, 1 static-pressure sensor, 1 CO₂ sensor, 1 outdoor weather station (temperature, humidity, wind direction, radiation). Sensors should be replaceable in-country with 24-month spares.
Alarm logic and failure modes
Every controller must include: high/low temperature alarms with hysteresis, static-pressure loss alarm, power-failure alarm with battery backup, sensor-failure fallback to manual staging, GSM/SMS alerts to at least two on-call staff numbers. Test alarms weekly — not just at commissioning.
Remote monitoring and data
Modern controllers stream to cloud dashboards for multi-site visibility. Verify: data ownership (yours, not the supplier's), export in CSV/Modbus, offline operation if internet drops, and cybersecurity — no exposed default passwords or internet-facing HTTP interfaces. Integration and open protocols
For farms with more than one house, insist on open protocols (Modbus TCP, OPC UA, MQTT) rather than proprietary cloud-only APIs. This preserves your ability to switch suppliers later, integrate with feed-mill and weighing systems, and build farm-level analytics without vendor lock-in.
