Pan feeders: the commercial standard for broilers
Circular pan feeders with a central auger deliver feed on demand; birds trigger flow by displacing feed at the pan lip. Modern anti-waste grilles reduce spillage to under 2%. Advantages: excellent uniformity, easy access for small chicks (open lip), and the ability to raise pans on winch as birds grow. Trade-off: higher CAPEX and more moving parts than chain.
Chain feeders: high throughput, lower flexibility
Chain-and-flight lines run continuously in a rectangular trough. Best for layer breeders and heavy broilers where robust throughput matters more than precise portion control. Downsides: harder to clean between flocks, more edge waste, and less friendly to day-old chicks (usually paired with supplementary chick paper for the first 7 days).
Auger and tube: budget systems
Direct auger-in-tube systems drop feed into small pans without central return. Lowest CAPEX per bird but sensitive to feed particle size, more prone to bridging with pelletized rations, and typically show 1–3% higher spillage. Acceptable for smaller flocks or low-cost markets; harder to defend on a 5-year TCO in premium markets.

RFQ specification framework
A defensible feeding-line RFQ specifies: pan diameter (Ø 33 or Ø 38 cm), pans per line, birds per pan at design density, feed drop control (mechanical vs sensor), winch capacity, motor kW, spare-parts kit for 24 months of operation, and a guaranteed maximum spillage rate. Ask for reference sites at your bird species, target weight and climate — not brochure numbers.
