Buy phosphorus, not product
MCP and DCP are priced per tonne of product but used per unit of available phosphorus, and the two grades differ enough that the comparison is never intuitive. Feed-grade MCP carries about 22–22.7% total phosphorus at a high relative bioavailability, while DCP carries roughly 18–18.5% at a slightly lower one. That is a 20–25% difference in delivered phosphorus per tonne of product before either price is considered, and it means a DCP offer must be materially cheaper per tonne to be the better buy. The calcium content moves in the opposite direction — DCP brings around 23–24% calcium against MCP's 15–17% — so switching between them also changes the limestone in your formula, not just the phosphate line.
Phytase is the biggest single lever on the rate
Most of the phosphorus in maize and soybean meal is bound as phytate and largely unavailable to poultry and pigs. A phytase releases part of it, and the enzyme supplier publishes a matrix value — commonly 0.10–0.15 percentage points of available phosphorus at standard dose, more at the higher 'superdosing' rates. Applying that matrix removes roughly 4–7 kg of MCP per tonne of feed. Two cautions apply in procurement: take the matrix from the specific enzyme and dose you actually buy rather than a generic figure, and remember that the matrix is only real if the enzyme survives conditioning — a heat-sensitive product pelleted at 85 °C without post-pellet application may not deliver what the formulation assumed.
Calcium is a separate decision for layers
In broilers, calcium and available phosphorus are formulated together at roughly a 2:1 ratio because excess calcium binds phosphorus and depresses its availability. In layers that logic breaks down: a hen in production needs about 4.0–4.5% dietary calcium for shell formation, supplied mostly as limestone and coarse particles fed to match the overnight shell-deposition cycle, while available phosphorus stays at a comparatively modest 0.32–0.38% and falls through the laying cycle. Treating the layer phosphate inclusion as a fraction of the calcium requirement is a common and expensive error — the two are bought and dosed for different biological jobs.
