Two carriers, two very different products

Feed-grade choline chloride 60% is a liquid absorbed onto a carrier, and the carrier decides how it behaves in your mill. Corn-cob grades are the traditional choice: cheaper, but hygroscopic, prone to caking in humid storage, and they contribute a small amount of energy and moisture. Silica-based grades flow better, cake less and are the safer option for premix operations and for tropical warehouses, at a price premium. Both are strongly hygroscopic relative to most other additives, which is why choline is usually kept out of a vitamin premix and dosed separately — held together, choline chloride degrades vitamins, particularly vitamin K and thiamine. If a supplier quotes '60% choline chloride' without naming the carrier, the quote is not comparable.

Choline and methionine share the same job

Choline, methionine and betaine all supply labile methyl groups, and to a limited extent they substitute for one another. That interaction is why the choline decision cannot be made in isolation from the amino acid line: reducing dietary choline increases the methyl demand met by methionine, and adding betaine can spare both. The practical procurement question is which methyl source is cheapest per unit delivered on the day, subject to the physiological limits — choline also has non-methyl roles in phospholipid and acetylcholine synthesis that betaine cannot cover, so the substitution is partial, not free. Ask your nutritionist for the substitution matrix they use before treating these as interchangeable line items.

Ruminants need protection, not more product

Unprotected choline chloride is extensively degraded in the rumen, so feeding a higher dose of the standard 60% product to dairy cows mostly feeds the rumen microbes. Transition-cow programmes use rumen-protected choline, which is dosed on grams of metabolisable choline delivered per cow per day rather than on grams of product per tonne of feed. When comparing rumen-protected offers, insist on the metabolisable choline figure and the encapsulation method — product percentage alone tells you almost nothing about what reaches the small intestine.
