Bags ⇄ tonnes converter for feed quantities

Convert feed bag counts to metric tonnes and vice versa for 25 kg, 50 kg and bulk bags. Formula, worked examples and links to species feed calculators.

Short answer · reviewed August 2026

To convert feed bags to metric tonnes, multiply the number of bags by the bag weight in kilograms and divide by 1,000. For example, 40 × 50 kg bags = 2,000 kg = 2 tonnes. To convert tonnes to bags, divide the tonnes by the bag weight in kg and multiply by 1,000: 5 tonnes ÷ 50 kg = 100 bags.

Formula

Tonnes = (Bags × Bag weight kg) ÷ 1,000
Bags = (Tonnes × 1,000) ÷ Bag weight kg
1 tonne = 1,000 kg

Bag weights vary by region and product. Always confirm whether the bag is 25 kg, 40 kg, 50 kg or a 1-tonne bulk bag before ordering transport or storage.

FAQ

How many 50 kg bags are in 1 tonne?

Twenty. 1,000 kg ÷ 50 kg per bag = 20 bags. For 25 kg bags, the count is 40 per tonne.

How do I convert 25 kg bags to tonnes?

Multiply the number of bags by 25 and divide by 1,000. Eighty 25 kg bags equal 2,000 kg, or 2 tonnes.

What is a bulk bag or big bag in feed?

A flexible intermediate bulk container (FIBC) commonly holds 500 kg or 1,000 kg of feed, premix or ingredient. Count it as the stated net weight, not the pallet weight.

Does bag weight include the pallet weight?

No. The net product weight is bag count × bag weight. Pallet and stretch-wrap weight is part of gross shipment weight and must be added separately for freight calculations.
