Mycotoxins in feed: testing, limits and mitigation

Mycotoxins are the single most under-managed feed hazard. A working program combines representative sampling, quantitative testing, ingredient rejection thresholds and validated binders/deactivators — not any one of these alone.

The toxins that matter

Aflatoxin B1, deoxynivalenol (DON), zearalenone, fumonisin B1+B2, ochratoxin A and T-2/HT-2. Multi-mycotoxin exposure is the norm, not the exception.

Sampling

The largest single source of error. Draw 100+ incremental samples from a truck or silo (GAFTA / GIPSA / ISO 24333 protocols) and composite before subsampling to the lab.

Testing options

Rapid lateral-flow strips at intake for high-risk lots; HPLC-MS/MS confirmation quarterly and for disputes.

Mitigation

Rejection thresholds first, then physical cleaning, then binders (bentonite, activated carbon) for polar toxins and deactivators (enzymes, yeast cell wall) for trichothecenes.

If you already have suppliers or equipment brands in mind, list them (comma-separated). We benchmark them against comparable qualified alternatives — vendor-neutral, no lock-in.

House size, climate zone, production target, equipment standards, Incoterms, warranty terms, or any must-have scope items. The more specific, the more comparable the quotes.

FAQ

Common questions

Are legal limits the same as safe limits?
No — regulatory maxima allow trade; animal performance thresholds are usually lower, especially for young and reproductive animals.
Do binders work for DON?
Adsorbent binders are largely ineffective for DON; enzymatic biotransformation is the current best practice.
