Feed mill planning — layout, equipment scope and automation level
A planning sheet for buyers preparing a feed mill or feed-production line. It sets out the layout zones in material-flow order, the equipment scope at each stage, and the three automation levels — so the requirement is written down before any manufacturer is asked to price it. How do you plan a feed mill layout, equipment scope and automation level?
Plan in material-flow order. Fix the layout zones first — intake, raw-material storage, dosing and grinding, mixing, pelleting or extrusion, finished storage and load-out, plus utilities. Then set the equipment scope stage by stage against the capacity in tonnes per hour and the storage days you need. Then choose the automation level: manual, semi-automatic, or fully automatic with batch traceability. Those three decisions define the tower height, the footprint, the installed power and the electrical scope, and they are what makes competing manufacturer quotations comparable.

1. Layout — zones in material-flow order
A feed mill layout is the material flow made physical. Plan each zone in sequence, then check truck circulation, hygiene separation and permit constraints across the whole site.

Truck tipping or pit intake, pre-cleaning, magnets, weighbridge and the queue space trucks need at peak arrival.

Silos or flat storage sized on storage days, bulk density and the number of ingredients kept separated.

3. Dosing and grinding

4. Mixing and liquid addition
Batch mixer, micro-dosing line, liquid addition skid and the buffer bins above and below the mixer.
Decides: Batches per hour, homogeneity, tower height
5. Pelleting or extrusion
Conditioner, press or extruder, dryer where applicable, cooler and crumbler with a sifting circuit.
Decides: Process route, steam and thermal demand, energy per tonne
6. Finished feed storage and load-out
Finished bins, bagging line, palletising and bulk load-out to trucks.
Decides: Dispatch peaks, bagged vs bulk split, truck turnaround
7. Utilities and services
Boiler room, compressor, transformer and MCC room, workshop, laboratory and staff areas.
Decides: Utility loads, fire and hygiene separation, permits
2. Equipment scope — stage by stage
Use this as the skeleton of the technical requirement. Every line should carry a capacity, a material specification and a clear scope boundary before it goes to a manufacturer.

3. Automation level
Automation is the scope item that varies most between quotations. Choose the level before the RFQ so electrical scope, control room and software licences are priced on the same basis.
Manual / basic
Local starters, manual dosing and recording, standalone scales.
Fits: Small on-farm mills where labour is available and recipes rarely change.
Watch: Dosing give-away, weak traceability, batch-to-batch variation.
Semi-automatic
PLC batching with recipe management, automated dosing and mixing, supervised pelleting.
Fits: Most commercial mills producing several formulas per day.
Watch: Interface split between the mechanical supplier and the automation supplier.
Fully automatic with traceability
Plant-wide SCADA, full recipe and batch traceability, production reporting, remote diagnostics, ERP link.
Fits: Integrators, export-oriented plants and any mill under audited feed-safety schemes.
