Farm feed equipment specifications: what to put in your request
For farms preparing feed for their own animals, not industrial feed-mill construction. Use this checklist to describe grinders, mixers, small pellet presses, storage, weighing and conveying so suppliers can quote like-for-like. Hammer mill or roller mill (grinder)
- Ingredients to grind and moisture range
- Required throughput in tonnes per hour for your ingredients
- Screen sizes or particle size target set with your nutritionist
- Motor power (kW), voltage, phase and frequency on your farm supply
- Dust control, guarding and noise requirements
Feed mixer (horizontal, vertical or TMR wagon)
- Batch size in tonnes or cubic metres and bulk density of the ration
- Mixing time per batch and how mixing uniformity will be checked
- Liquid addition (oil, molasses) if needed
- Loading and discharge method, height and clean-out access
- Motor or PTO power and tractor size for mobile mixers
Small pellet press (if you pellet)
- Pellet diameter for each species and life stage
- Throughput on your actual formula
- Conditioning (steam or none) and cooling/drying arrangement
- Die and roller wear parts, spares availability
- Motor power and electrical supply
Storage bins and silos
- Capacity in tonnes for the ingredient or finished feed
- Material, coating and ventilation for your climate
- Discharge type, inspection hatch and level indication
- Foundation, delivery-truck access and fill pipe height
Weighing and dosing
- Scale capacity and readable division
- Calibration method and certificate on delivery
- Minor-ingredient and premix dosing accuracy needed
- Batch records or data export
Conveying (augers, elevators)
- Distance, height and angle
- Throughput matching the grinder or mixer
- Material contact surfaces and clean-out
- Safety guards and emergency stops
