Short answer

Canada is a mature, quota-governed feed market. Supply management in poultry and eggs makes volume predictable, dairy is concentrated and technically demanding, and the Prairies combine large-scale grain supply with swine and beef feeding. Salmonid aquafeed on both coasts adds an extrusion segment with its own requirements.
Two things distinguish Canadian projects. The first is climate: freeze protection, heated conveying and reception areas, condensation management and cold-start behaviour are engineering requirements that a temperate-climate quotation will not include. The second is compliance and language: the modernised CFIA Feeds Regulations set out licensing, hazard controls and traceability expectations, and bilingual English/French documentation is a practical requirement in much of the country, particularly Québec.

Energy
- Electricity pricing varies dramatically by province — Québec, Manitoba and British Columbia differ sharply from Alberta and the Maritimes, and that changes the value of efficiency scope.
- Winter heating of reception, conveying and building envelope adds thermal load absent from temperate models.
- Require guaranteed kWh per tonne by section, plus a stated assumption for winter operation.
Storage and silos
- Prairie sites sit close to grain supply; Eastern and coastal sites carry longer inbound logistics and usually need more cover.
- Freeze and condensation management in silos and conveying is a design requirement, not an operational afterthought.
- Model canola meal, pulses and by-products separately — bulk density and flow differ meaningfully from corn and soybean meal.
Total cost of ownership
- Compare installed cost plus energy, wear parts, maintenance labour and winter downtime risk over five and ten years.
- Confirm Canadian service coverage and parts stocking; cross-border logistics in winter is a real downtime multiplier.

What does CFIA compliance mean for a feed mill project?
The modernised Feeds Regulations set out licensing, preventive control and traceability expectations for feed businesses. Practically, that means documented hazard controls, defined sampling and record-keeping, and traceability at batch level — all of which have design consequences for sampling points, segregation and software scope. State the compliance requirement in the RFQ so it is priced rather than assumed.
Why does cold-climate design matter so much?
Freeze protection, insulated and heated reception, condensation control in silos and conveying, and reliable cold starts are not standard inclusions in most international quotations. Omitting them produces an artificially low bid and real winter downtime. Specify the design ambient minimum explicitly and require each supplier to state how the design meets it.
Is bilingual documentation really necessary?
In Québec and for many national buyers, English and French operator documentation, safety information and training are a practical requirement. It is far cheaper to include it in the original supplier scope than to commission translation and revalidation after delivery.
