In both cases the questions to settle first are tonnage per day, the number of separate feed streams and the distribution window.

The infrastructure decision is rarely a single machine: it involves how bulk material arrives and is stored, how many separate streams must be kept apart, how the ration or diet is composed and delivered, and how consumption is recorded per group. What is precision feeding on a commercial pig farm?
In commercial practice it means dispensing feed to a defined group — or in some systems an individual animal — with controlled accuracy, according to a schedule that can differ by production phase, and recording what was actually delivered and consumed. It is an infrastructure and data capability, not a ration. FeedMatch scopes the equipment and control requirement; the diet itself remains the responsibility of your nutritionist.
When does automatic feeding make sense on a dairy or feedlot?
Usually when feeding frequency, group count or labour availability makes manual delivery inconsistent, or when the operation needs verifiable records of what each group received. The decision should be tested against the whole chain: receiving and storage rate, mixing capacity, batches achievable within the daily window, delivery routing, and whether refusals are measured. Automating delivery on top of a storage or mixing constraint does not increase what reaches the animals.
