It does not solve a storage shortfall, a distribution rate that cannot reach every unit, or a supply chain that delivers late. It also introduces new requirements — power quality, service response, spares, controls competence and a manual fallback for outages. Treat it as one element of the feeding infrastructure, not as a substitute for it.

How to scope it without over-buying

  • Automate the step that is failing first, usually dispensing or scheduling, before automating everything.
  • Insist on per-unit consumption data from day one, because it is what makes every later decision measurable.
  • Confirm that distribution can supply the automated feeders at the required rate before specifying them.
  • Specify the manual fallback procedure and the spare-parts and service-response terms in the RFQ.
  • Ask suppliers for a phased scope that can extend to the full unit count as the farm grows.
