Managing feed across a large multi-unit farm
Above roughly a dozen production units, feeding stops being a routine and becomes a distribution and information system. The architecture that scales has five layers: central receiving and bulk storage, a distribution network to move feed toward the units, local or day storage at or near each unit, controlled dispensing at the unit itself, and a control layer that schedules feeding, records consumption per unit, raises alarms and can be seen remotely. Farms usually add the first four and discover too late that the fifth is what actually makes forty units manageable.
A manager can hold five houses or ten ponds in their head. Forty is a different category of problem: the same total tonnage now has to be split correctly many more ways, at the right times, with an auditable record for each unit, by staff who cannot personally verify every delivery. This guide describes the architecture that commercial multi-unit operations use, and the questions to settle before asking anyone to quote it.

- Central receiving: truck access, unloading rate, weighing and the physical turnaround the site can sustain each day.
- Bulk storage: total tonnage, cover days and separate compartments for each feed type and phase.
- Distribution: conveying, augers, blowers or vehicle routes able to move the daily tonnage within the available window.
- Local or day storage plus dispensing at each unit, sized around distribution frequency and feeding events.
- Control and monitoring: scheduling, per-unit consumption recording, alarms, remote access and reporting.
Central versus distributed storage
One central storage block simplifies receiving, weighing and stock control, and usually reduces the number of truck movements. It concentrates risk: an outage or a contamination event affects everything, and long distribution runs generate fines and add energy cost. Distributed storage at unit level shortens distribution, contains risk and simplifies phasing, but multiplies filling operations, complicates stock visibility and can make feed-type segregation harder to enforce. Most large sites end up with a hybrid — central bulk storage with local day bins — and the real design question is how many days each layer should hold.
The information layer is the part most often under-specified
- Per-unit consumption recorded automatically at the time of feeding, not reconstructed later.
- Schedules that can differ by production stage and be changed centrally across many units.
- Alarms for failed feeding events, empty bins, blockages and power loss.
- Remote visibility for managers who cannot physically visit every unit daily.
- Exportable data that reconciles against delivery records and stock counts.
- Defined behaviour during a communications or power outage, including manual fallback.
Questions to settle before requesting quotations
- Final unit count and layout distances, not the current ones.
- Number of feed types that must be kept separate all the way to the unit.
- Daily distribution window and the tonnage that must move inside it.
- Whether control is required per unit, per group or per farm.
- Integration expectations with existing farm software, and data ownership.
- Service response time, spares availability and local support for the control layer.
