
Poultry Ventilation & Climate Control: A Commercial Engineering Guide
Ventilation is where commercial poultry projects most often succeed or fail. The system must deliver two independent duties simultaneously: (1) minimum air-quality ventilation (removing CO₂, NH₃, moisture) and (2) sensible cooling at peak load. Three ventilation modes — one control philosophy
Modern commercial houses run three modes tied to outdoor temperature: minimum (fixed timer + inlet), transitional (variable-speed tunnel fans with side inlets), and tunnel (all fans + evap cooling). The controller manages transitions on outdoor and inside temperature, static pressure and CO₂. Buying a house without integrated static-pressure control is a false economy — birds pay for it in FCR and mortality.
Sizing ventilation from first principles
Minimum ventilation is sized on moisture (typically 1.0–1.4 m³/h per kg bird) or CO₂ (< 3,000 ppm target). Tunnel ventilation is sized on wind-chill effective temperature — a 2.0–3.0 m/s air velocity through the bird zone at peak stocking. Evaporative cooling reduces incoming air by 4–10 °C depending on wet-bulb depression; verify with local psychrometric data before ordering pads or fogging. Static pressure — the KPI most RFQs miss
House static pressure (typically 20–35 Pa in minimum ventilation) drives inlet air throw and mixing. Suppliers should quote inlet size and count with a pressure-vs-flow chart, not just a fan count. Ask the supplier for a static-pressure calculation for your house dimensions signed by their engineer — this is a standard deliverable.
Ammonia, CO₂ and welfare limits
Commercial welfare thresholds: NH₃ ≤ 20 ppm, CO₂ ≤ 3,000 ppm, relative humidity 50–70%. EU broiler welfare directive 2007/43 requires monitoring. Ventilation is the single most safety-critical utility on a poultry farm. A 6-hour outage in tunnel mode is a mortality event.
