Why static pressure matters

In minimum ventilation, wall or ceiling inlets throw incoming air toward the room's centre where it mixes with warm air before dropping to birds. Air-throw distance is a function of pressure difference across the inlet: 20 Pa throws air ~4 m, 30 Pa throws ~6 m, 40 Pa throws ~8 m. Wrong pressure = cold air drops on birds directly.

Commercial setpoints

Minimum ventilation setpoint: 20–35 Pa depending on house width. Transitional ventilation: 15–25 Pa. Tunnel ventilation: 20–30 Pa driven by pad and inlet drag. Setpoints ramp with fan stage — a fixed setpoint across all modes is a common error.

Pressure-controlled inlets

Inlets must open and close automatically to hold setpoint as fans stage. Two architectures: (1) cable-driven side-wall inlets with a single actuator per row, (2) individual pneumatic or servo inlets per opening. Cable is cheaper and standard for broilers; individual servos are more precise and used in layer barns and breeder houses.

Sensor placement and count

Pressure sensors installed at bird height, mid-house, protected from direct airflow. Two sensors per house for redundancy — if one drifts, the other alarms. Calibrate every 6 months; sensor drift is invisible until birds pay for it.

Commissioning: the smoke test

At commissioning, run each ventilation mode and release smoke at inlets. Correct behaviour: smoke hugs the ceiling for 4–6 m, mixes with room air, drops uniformly. Wrong behaviour: smoke drops directly, curls back at inlet, or leaves a cold zone below the inlet. Any commercial supplier should perform this test with you and sign a commissioning report.

Can I use static pressure to detect a fan failure?
Yes — a sudden pressure change with no setpoint change is a fault. Modern controllers detect this and alarm within 60 seconds.
Why does my house pressure vary with wind?
Wind pressure on inlets shifts effective differential. Wind-neutral inlets or windbreak walls stabilise this. Common issue on hilltop sites.
How often should inlets be cleaned?
Between flocks minimum. Dust and cobwebs block inlets and reduce effective pressure — a slow, invisible degradation.
